Here's a quick way to make a pretty good-looking hardwood cutting board out of 3 woods, walnut, maple and mahogany.
If you consider yourself new to woodworking, this is a classic project that you can knock out in a weekend and it'll fit your budget because it doesn't require much wood.
Building a cutting board is also a fantastic way to get acquainted with woodworking essentials like cutting, clamping/gluing, routing, shaping, and reveling in the satisfaction of building a beautiful project for your home.
***
We're basically using 6 steps:
1. Cut Some Strips
2. Arrange Strips in a Pattern You Like
3. Glue It Up
4. Plane It Smooth
5. Cut and Rout It to Shape
6. Sand it & oil it

You can plane the two halves to the same thickness with a bench top planer that a lot pf people DO have, then carefully glue them together and scrape/sand/hand plane. Not as quick, but would work fine.

Hi! Please help me with an info! So if we oil a cutting board with Tung Oil enough times, would it eventually shine? I have oiled mine 7 times now & still it has no shine. So if I do it a few more times, would the wood eventually shine?
@monelfunkawitz3966
@monelfunkawitz3966 4 жыл бұрын
Tung oil is COMPLETELY the wrong oil to use on a cutting board. Food grade mineral oil or vegetable oil ONLY. Tung, linseed and the like can have catalysts in them that you do not want on a cutting board. Tung oil is a grain penetrating oil that does not build up to a shine. If you want to make a cutting board, use mineral oil. If you are making something wooden for outside and want satin finish, tung. If you want shine, hand rubbed french polish with shellac. If you made a cutting board and used tung oil on it, don't use it for a cutting board.
@WoodworkingbyAsher
@WoodworkingbyAsher 4 жыл бұрын
To get a "shine" on your cutting board you have a few options. You can sand your cutting board to a very fine grit, or do an epoxy flood coat among other options. You should also be able to buff the tung oil to achieve a smooth finish.

Yes, for this one we glued them on edge. To make it end grain style there is essentially another "session" of cutting, rotating and glueing. Difficult to explain properly here, but I am sure there are numerous videos about that process.
