Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
This was highly requested after I mentioned plackets in the making of videos of a couple of historical skirts. Here are videos on how to make those skirts, they are very similar and are both 1890s skirts:
1890s walking suit • Making an 1890s walkin...
1890s walking skirt • Making a late Victoria...
The skirt I am using for this tutorial is the skirt which constitutes my Edwardian Mourning dress, you can find that video here: • Making an Edwardian Mo...
Do let me know if there is anything that is no very clear! Something I want to mention is that I then used pretty much the exact same method for my bodice closure for the Edwardian gown too, so this method can be used for all kinds of closures. If you are uneasy about using your machine to sew over the eyes (indeed, I totally agree), there are a few other options. You can handsew this seam, so you can add snaps instead, or handsew eyes after the seam is sewn or you can also sew the placket on and then add handsewn bars.

To be honest, I am not a total novice at sewing and I love handsewing, but I am a little lost with this video. if you explain things in the future, it would be great to have some closeups of what exactly you are doing, or to just have it held into the camera once before you start. also for the people that do not breathe every stitch, try to name the stitches you use in the voiceover whenever you switch or start a new step. thank you for your hard work

That was interesting, thanks! Next time, please use a lighter color of fabric so we can see the details of what you are sewing. I was looking for this tutorial, but I had a hard time following the steps. Thanks for sharing!

That was very interesting. I normally use a placket on my reversible skirts. I didn't know there were so many ways to do them, even though each of mine are slightly different. I really liked the hook and eye one you did. I guess I'm going down the placket rabbit hole, next. Thank you for this, Cat. Stay well.

Hi Michelle, I was wondering how CAN you sew packets on reversal Skirts?! I am a beginner and I love button plackets more than zips, would it be possible to send me if you have websites addresses that teach how to draft and sew such placket. Thank you in advance for your help and support. Best wishes.

@@Amah-Lady I sew a false flat felled seam. (It is false in that the two raw edges aren't wrapped around each other.) The reversible placket is then created by covering the raw edges with a ribbon, if you wish, or bias tape. It's not hard, but may need to be seen to be understood.

I have come back to this video 4-6 times at least in this last week to take meticulous notes, as I am working on 3 full circle skirts at same time and needed a good way to close them. This was a lifesaver and I am so very thankful you did this video.

Since zippers are equal in evilness to sleeves, I prefer plackets in all of my skirts and may or may not debate, ripping out all zippers and replacing them with plackets in skirts I've bought. I do not hate sewing hooks and eyes though, they just get caught in my bags or cardigans or sweaters all the time, unraveling them so I actualy prefer snaps even though they are worse to sew on. Might think about investing in a snap setter tool. Great video as always, I now definitely need a copy of Authentic Victorian Dressmakingtechniques. Maybe for Christmas...

this video helped me so much with my own placket sewing. I did accidentally put the hooks and eyes on the wrong sides, so that the hooks ended up on the left and the eyes on the right. (partially because the black hardware on black fabric is a bit hard to see on video, but also because the notes i took were a bit sloppy and I didn't double check.)

I’m curious: When you’re cutting out the rectangular pieces, you drew them out with a grid ruler, then freehand cut them with a rotary cutter. Is there an accuracy or a hand strength reason you chose this method? My intro to sewing is as a quilter, so this seems... odd. In quilting, which is generally based on strait lines, you don’t trace pieces. You’d set that grid ruler over the fabric, hold it firmly, pressing it down with your left hand (you do need some hand/wrist strength), and run the rotary blade along the side of the ruler to keep your cuts from wavering. The grid ruler can also be used in conjunction with the grid on the cutting mat for lining things up. A video on using quilting rulers would make it make sense. I’m just curious if you were so used to using garment construction techniques, that it just isn’t the first thing to cross your mind... or maybe it’s for the sake of the video? - I literally was convinced to try quilting after getting incredibly frustrated with a clothing sewing pattern. Curves? Clip and match? I was supposed to transfer that mark?! What do you mean I should have pinned that?! When I swore I hated sewing, my then partner sucked me into quilting promising me all of the things I was complaining about were absent from quilting. And they are - until you get into some really advanced geekery. 15 years and 5 quilts later, I’ve got a very lopsided set of sewing skills coming into attempting garment construction. Thanks for helping me fill in some gaps.

Anyone else as tall as me, so whenever you walk through doors your plackets or belt loops are perfect height with the door knob and get caught on them? At least after this video, Im hoping my plackets will be better done and so this doesn’t happen.
