I make a convection stove out of 2 soup cans. It may be too small to boil water quickly, but it is a concept that I can make larger, which should take care of the airflow issues.

Nice! I like experimental builds. I make a lot of stuff from cans - coffee-cans, bean-cans, coke-cans, beer-cans, etc. FYI your kitchen scissors will cut the lids/sides easier and cleaner than tin snips will, as will a Stanley (box-cutter) or craft knife :)

Thank you for the input. I thought about trying some scissors. Glad to know what has worked for you. Thank you for watching.

Good morning Tom. Thanks for sharing this prototype build. I was waiting for you to add a pinecone or larger fuel lump in the bottom to aid in concentrating sustained heat under the pot of water. This is where the value of the rocket stove design comes into play by allowing a channel to add fuel while leaving the cooking pot remain on the chimney. (Future discussion talking point.) Nice reference to and use of safety gear. Perhaps a bail handle made from a pants hanger with the cardboard tube removed. Wishing you and your family a blessed week. Peace brother

Morning, JW. I hadn’t thought about pine cones for fuel. I’ve got a few alternative fuel ideas, I’ll add that to this list. Perhaps a video just on alternative fuels. Thank you for watching. Thank you for the support and encouragement. Peace, brother.

Awesome! If you get the same size can drill holes on the bottom of that can. Cut the can to the very bottom where the holes are and put it on the very bottom of the stove. Use a big binder clip and you can adjust your stove. How to make an adjustable ring. :) Wait for the stove to get hot first, then play around with the adjuster. :)

I like how you explained the airflow thing. I have several of these stoves in various sizes. My main problem is they go out if the wind blows, even slightly. Then they smoke for an hour. I don't know if the holes are letting too much wind in or if it needs more/bigger holes to let more air in. I'll be watching for part 2. Hope you find the problem. When you build the next one, try a load of wood pellets and light the top with some alcohol or lighter fluid. When my biggest one is in the mood it will burn over 40 minutes on about 2 cups of pellets. The only catch is they fall out if your bottom holes are too big.

Thank you, Rick. I hadn’t thought about pellets. I have some. Will give it a try. I’ve seen the holes in the bottom in other stoves as well. I’ll try that on the prototype I don’t have the double bottom in. Thank you for the suggestions.

Good on you for giving this a try Tom, wood gas stoves are quite tricky.

Thank you for the feedback. I’m going to keep playing with this concept. I put up a couple of big stainless pots this week. I’m going bigger. :-) Thank you for watching.

You can add a stainless steel cake cooler with feet so you don't have to use rocks. You can also drill stainless steel screws for the feet.

Good to see you back! It was the rocket stoves that first brought me to your channel. This is a valuable experiment into small stoves that operate like the solo. Thanks! I have an idea for a video that is a compilation of all the times the train shows up in your videos!

@@GreenShortzDIY I'd love to see you try one like this with the outer can being 1 Gal paint can size. I think there's something about scale on both rocket stoves and gasifier stoves like this one and the solo. It seems like if you had the ratio of burn chamber size, air holes, etc the same you could scale it up and down but that doesn't seem to hold. I made a tiny rocket stove with 1.5" tubing, and insulated burn chamber. it works well at times but other times goes all smoky.

Good informational video. I also notice on small stoves like this too they have holes in the bottom of burn chamber. I know you put a shin bottom as insulator. Maybe just both this bottom lids and just drill holes in them. These soup can stoves dupont last forever anyway. Just a thought.

Thank you for the suggestions, Kevin. I’ve seen the holes in the bottom of the can as well. I’ll give that a try on my first prototype, without the insulated bottom. Thank you for watching.

Also if you drill holes at the top of the can you will have a lot less smoke.

I've been watching some older videos about these stoves and it seems like only two things really matter. 1. Diameter of the cans. They should be close to the same. You want the space between them to me minimal so it heats up quickly and maintains it's temperature. But you don't want it so small that it restricts the airflow. 2. Air holes. You need enough but not too many. Get those two things right and everybody is happy.

Thanks, Rick. I was actually surprised that the cans needed to be so close to the same size. I'm going to keep playing with this concept. Thank you for watching.

@@GreenShortzDIY there's a video called DIY Woodpecker Stove from Ray Isimz. The stove is made from two stainless steel utensil holders. The gap between them is very small. I made one and it burns great. Sometimes. When it's in the mood it will go for 40 minutes or more on a load of wood pellets. When it's not it goes out after about 10 minutes and just smokes until I relight it. It has 1/8" holes in the bottom but none around the bottom. I don't know why it's so sensitive or how to fix it.

When I took my food prep classes in high school and college, we were taught that the tip of the flame was the hottest part; so, that meant that the flame should not come up the sides of the pan, even a little bit. If I accidentally burned myself on the flame, it did not matter to my skin which part of the flame got to it. Fire is hot no matter where I touched it and I would get burned. I do not have a thermometer that is able to be immersed into fire; so, have never been able to test it out. Three different teachers have said pretty much the same thing, though. They all said that the tip of the flame should barely touch the bottom of the pan. If. you don't have a larger can, maybe you can find one at a local restaurant. Call them. Commercial size cans are big. For the inner can, you might be able to use a juice can like tomato juice would come in.

Thank for the input, Donna. Good info. The stove seemed to work well without the pot on it. I think raising it up might help and address your concern about flame height. I picked 16 and 12 quart stainless boiler pots at WalMart this week. I’m going big. Thank you for watching.

I think that the pot you used for the water was too big. A smaller surface area would heat faster with the size of cans you are using.
