Strongly recommend to dig down more than 2 blocks below the spawner, ideally 4 or 5 blocks. This is to prevent the mob spanwer cap being reached too early, especially if the mob spawns very back.

This is the cheap and cheerful way to xp Mob Farm. I usually do the expensive way using sticky pistons, redstone, and pressure plates. Either way it still works like AFK farm.
