How To Make a Spring Pole Lathe Part 5
we are making a treadle lathe with double spring pole from Roy underhill's plans in popular woodworking with several modifications from the Hand Tool School. so here is the last video in the how to make a lathe or DIY lathe series. In this video, we make the puppet out of hardwood and install a live center on both the headstock and tailstock. we will also be making the tool rest out of white oak and brass.

James, I built a springpole lathe some 30 years ago. I believe that I reviewed the illustrations of Eric Sloane's book on tools in order to get some idea of how to proceed. Surprisingly, what I ended up building is quite similar to the lathe which you constructed. However, I used some very nice poplar boards which were completely free of knots. They had been tossed out of the lumber pile by the grader, because they were just under the required 5/4 " thickness. I did the same vertical supports as you. I also did the mortise and tenon joinery for the rails, although I secured them to the frame by using a mortised slot and a wedge to set them in tight. The one distinct difference in my lathe, however, was that I place my bow in the top of the rear upright by creating a mounting block which was inserted thru an angled mortise in the upright. The bow, itself was made from a maple broom handle which I shaved down to a thin, flexible stick. I placed the bow into the mounting head by using a dovetailed slot into which the bow was fitted. I too wanted a treadle wheel inorder to get away from the reciprocating spin of the bow, so I created a wheel of feloes which were secured by overlapping segments in a double layered wheel. All pieces were joined by using hickory pegs with walnut foxtails. The entire build was completed wholly by hand, without ever using any electrical devices. The project was done for an Anthropology class on tools. It got an A.

For a better treadle, make it an A Frame with two pivot points to the ground. This will give you a nice up and down motion with no sway. To make it even better fasten a piece of wood to the pivit points, so it lays on the ground and you can stand on it. This will insure that when you really go at it the treadle won't wonder. Hope this is clear and it helps. Keep up the good work!

These look like fun to use, especially with green wood. I have always wondered, why, even on modern examples like yours, that a driven spindle isn't employed, rather than the between centres arrangement. Not having to work around the cord would be quite an upside, especially in green wood turning which appears to be very quick. There must be some downsides (other than the expense and complication of a couple of bearings and some sort of chuck).
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 3 жыл бұрын
A lot of people have added that on. It's just more work and often becomes more difficult to set up. It requires a lot more on the headstock to support that movement. But it can be done. Usually if you're going to put that much work into it you go ahead and make it a flywheel.

Are the live centers #2s? I’m currently trying to figure out what drill bits I should use to do it. I think 22/32, 21/32, 20/32, and finish with 19/32. Is that overkill? Should I just use two sizes and whack it hard into place? Thank you James. I’ve been watching this with my 7yo boy and building it the last 3 weeks. I can’t wait!

I was wondering about putting a drive bit and pulley system that the leather strip could drive and give you full access to the piece being turned. Just a thought for a possible "upgrade". Any thoughts on doing something like this as and optional accessory? Maybe a home made chuck with a pulley groove or face plate adapter for bowls? My mind is reeling with accessory ideas. Future videos for accessories? Great lathe. The imagination is the only limiting factor or what accessories could be made/carved for use with this awesome hand made tool. PLUS, you get a good leg workout and some cardio too. Thanks for sharing. I'll be looking for the all in one video build compilation. Just goes to show, with a bit of wood and dedication you don't have to spend $2400 on a lathe. (or other tools for that matter) a treadle system can drive just about any tool your little heart can dream up. And for a lot less money than a commercially available power tool.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 жыл бұрын
so true Thomas. there are a lot of accessories I want to make for this! there are also chuck mekenisums but they often require stronger headstock to cantilever out the weight and torsion of the cord. but there are still ways of making a bowl on it, and I plan to show that soon.

Even though my thumbnail choice didn't make the cut, I watched this anyway (sore loser). My question is how large of a diameter can you turn on this and what determines that? Well, other than the distance between the live centers and the center structure. I think if I saw this in person I could figure it out but I can't. Thanks
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 жыл бұрын
LOL thanks man! it depends more on what you can wrap the cord around. I could do a 12" bowl with the right add-on, much bigger then that and you run into tork issues. but I really do not want the spindle much more than 3" in diameter or you may not ret 2 full rotations before it returns.
