I suddenly went to this video and I heard "This is a family show." Is it bad that I snorted when I heard that?

I miss the old threadbanger :( this was when I started to learn how to sew and Threadbanger always gave me great ideas. Now the channel is just videos of Rob doing drunk food and bleeding - which is fun sometimes, but not what Threadbanger was all about. I'd be nice to see more tutorials on sewing and crafting again.

If you don't want to dress completely steampunk, you can always incorporate some of it's ideas into your style. For example, putting some old clock parts on clothing. It can be as simple as that.

I found an amazing 70s edwardian revival dress at goodwill a few weeks back. I paired that with a leather steampunk corset off etsy with a top hat and goggles that I also got off etsy. I have some other awesome accessories that I have as well. Best bet for those who can't sew at all is to go thrifting. I also found an awesome top that would work too.

Sure, look up "cogs" or "clock parts" on ebay, there are tons there, I found a 5oz pack for about £10. I take apart old clocks aswell which is fun and gives lots of cogs and gears. Be sure to get some old wind up ones if you're planning to do this though as modern clocks use plastic gears which aren't as cool looking.

I like how you described your thoughts on what Steampunk actually "is". :) I have trouble explaining it to people who haven't heard of it before. I usually end up saying something to the effect of it's old west meets gears and lots of copper and gold color accents. LOL I think it can be so much more then just that though. But still - I always start with the old western patterns as a base for my own work and move on from there. Ty for posting this video! I enjoyed watching it very much. :D

@marisinging You could pretty easily use the mens' shirt for everyday wear, if you were so inclined. You could also wear the blouse and corset combination with a pair of pants. It just depends on what you're comfortable wearing in public and what sort of garments you make.

@rodiansinger you dont have to wear a corset in order to be steampunk. the rule of thumb i think for just about any style is make it your own, and any tutorials or instructions are simply guidelines. try vests, or sometimes just a steampunk style shirt without anything over it can look good. keep trying on diffrent things until you feel comfortable about what your wearing. good luck!

@rodiansinger steampunk is a "what if" kind of thing. Basically look at it this way: What if Victorian technology, styles and sensibilities continued on into the future (now or even further), shake a little science fiction on it, then apply it to everyday objects that we have now. That's a very simplified way of looking at it but you get the idea.

@AltairBaker try buying patterns....everything from historical patterns off of ebay to costume recreations in walmart....though i found most of the ones on ebay are a fraction of what a store would have sold them for....for easier items...make a paper pattern with the general idea of what you need and save a few bucks....i.e. made patterns for my vest and bloomers and capes that way....few sheets of paper and some tape....then pin to and cut out your fabric like normal
