In this episode we build a DIY storm kettle commonly refered to by other names such as a Kelly kettle, Ghillie kettle, Hobo kettle, rocket kettle or bush kettle.
We will be using scrap stainless steel and using a Tig welder but you can use MIG or even stainless stick if preffered. Aluminium and Titanium can also be used for this build if you have a AC/DC TIG machine.

Great job! I suggest drilling a small hole in the top, in front of the handle, which will prevent the kettle from sputtering when you pour the hot water.

If you put a small hole in the top near the handle, the water will flow easily when you pour , rather than how it currently "Glugs".. Great Videp and lovely skills. Well done Sir.

Thank you again Geoff for you kind support. I've got loads of stuff I want to make, got a list of sculptures, power hammer developments, forged items, steam generators and robotic arms etc... Problem I have is I've gone back to full time work and what time I have left my family wants to have. I'm struggling with it really as I'm desperate to fulfill my creative endeavours but my commitments out way it. Soon I hope to finish this stags head sculpture and then make some changes to enable more builds. All the very best. Cheers J

At 17 minutes into the video I was expecting you to say “ahhhhhh Yorkshire Tea” - brilliant vid Joshua, absolutely wonderful. Superb designed and constructed billy. - you are indeed one clever fellow. I would never be able to make one as useless at welding but really admired the design and build process. Great to see your lovely family. Your explanation of power losses in electrical distribution was impressive (my own trade was in HV and LV Electrical distribution and maintenance). I took a college class on welding and am still learning more about different kinds of welding. I subscribed to your channel a while back but this video just showed up in my feed. So much to learn! I'll be following more of what you do. You have awesome content. Btw I am a retired firefighter/emt and a farrier. I do some blacksmithing but always want to learn more. I wish you the best.

Nice project. But as it is a "storm kettle" perhaps you also want to make a fire box for it that is sealed against the weather (like the Kelly's) and not open to the wind and rain.

My thoughts exactly. I would also put a vent hole in the base of that fire pot and then you’ll boil water in 5 to 8 minutes instead of 10 to 15 minutes. My Kelly scout boils water in 5 1/2 minutes

So if using a central triangle reduced the numer welds from 4 to 3 then wouldn’t using an oval reduce it from 3 to 2? And if you’re going that far you might just as well reduce the number of pieces you have to make into semi circles by roling the shape of the inside to match the outside but smaller reducing the number of welds to make the central tube from 2 to 1. And if you then go on to get rid of the internal taper that would drastically simplify welding for the top and bottom pieces. I’d also recommend welding on a funnel around the spout so that it’s easier to get the water inside. Other than those tweaks I’d recommend, excellent job and fantastic welds!

Jossua very impressed, witb your kettle i like the fact you have a solid handle. Its difficult to weld alloys, i have done oxy asetelene welding 50 years ago. Difficult to weld as you can punch a hole through it. You have mixed ferros and non ferrus metals togeth, you may get oxcy asidic action between these metals in time as it is in contact with water. Time will tell. But well done.

The best modification for a storm kettle is to put a shower head on the spout for warm gravity showers. It works great! Try it!

Thank you so much. I use mine every weekend taking my girls into the woods with a hammock and we have tea and noodles and sausages on a stick. I'm welding a tube on mine for a spout and getting a wooden bung made so I can transport water already in it. I may make another out of aluminium too for it to be lighter in weight. Hi Josh, you could look to the past at the 'Sirram' kettle, unlike a storm ⛈ kettle, this one ☝️ has tubes rather like a boiler running from top to bottom, it would also require a separate wood burning hobo stove like most IKEA ones seen on here or another heat source. The Sirram would have originally sat on a solid fuelled range cooker. Trust this gives you a few ideas 💡.

Love the design Joshua! Very efficient. How long did it take to boil that I guess about 1.8 litres of water? Your reasoning for the triangular design is very sound, from my own experience rolling a tube by hand is a nightmare unless you are prepared to waste a lot of material and cutting off the straight ends! I admire you what it seems to me a commitment to have regard for the environment in the reuse of materials and not waste things, a regard for your own three children's future I would imagine. Good on you Sir. I've only just found your channel last night and subscribed immediately having seen the stags head outside your workshop. Now I have just watched the five stag bookend videos and as a retired wood and metal craftsman am in awe of your conceptual design and building skills. May it long continue. You and your family stay safe in these horrible times, I'm fearful that the easing of the lockdown is going to come back and bite us all in the arse.

Great video, I can only dream of having your skill level! If you still have the Rohr 200 mi Mig. I would love to see how you set it up for different thicknesses/ applications. I have the same welder, which doesn't come with a guide. If you have the time to look at my videos, you will see i am managing to 'stick metal together' but i haven't mastered the settings!

If there were one short coming of the Kelly kettle I would say it is the requirement not to run it dry. ( this will wreck the kettle) - In my mind the benifits of being able to run dry is to utilise the compact fire and chimimy effect with a cooker on the exhaust top ( as per the Kelly kit). This would add wonderfully to the versitility of the stove tkeing it well beyond just a kettle the must be boiling / heating water even when one may need the heat for the cooktop alone

Great little project, I can offer a possible easy improvement. Check out the heavy haulage exhaust workshops. Perfect heavy gauge stainless tube/pipe in many sizes. Just a thought. They may even have an offcut bin or scrap bin. Good luck.

Great video tutorial as usual..Thank you..here is the US a lot of people use those large bridge rectifiers like 1600v 200amp for $21usd to modify Chinese welders to DC from AC flux core mig machines and AC stick welders, some and a tig torch to them for scratch start and some even and a High frequency starting board bought off ebay or amazon very cheaply..some add capacitors to filter the current to the torch but many do not..many video tutorial on the subject under " Harbor freight welder conversion " HF is our national Chinese tool shop in the states..they sell 3 different tiers of equipment quality's.. Chicago.. Titanium..Vulcan..its interesting to see each country get the same Chinese equipment just under different brand names..all probably made in the factory's..

Thank you. Yeah I got a bridge rectifier for when I tried to use my AC stick welder as a 48v power source for my induction forge. I've got some good use out of my cheap Monday MIG recently, I'm pleased that it still works fine and has paid for it self very quickly. Cheers J

Thanks for explaining the algorithm. Sure I'll like and comment. I am an engineer myself, nearing retirement, with not a lot saved. I plan on collecting tools and skills over the next 5 - 8 years to make products for sale to finance retirement. Your presentations are great for metal based products. I especially like the tooling. I have a few years of radio production test experience. You have a coal forge. Any plans for a gas forge?

Love the video instead of sticking the design straight onto metal use masking tape on the metal first the stick design ontop of masking tape there is no cleanups

Hi, what size and type of filler rod would you reccomend please? Is 1.6mm 316 okay for 304 1.2mm sheet? Or should I use 308 2mm or something else? PS, the plans are great. Thanks

Hi thank you so much. Yes always go for a higher grade filler so 316 on 304 is good. I used 1.6 filler on mine but if you can match the material thickness you'll get nicer control. Cheers J

Hi Devon. If you're tig welding stainless and want a sanitary finish on the inside I would highly recommend a back purge. Is not necessary with aluminium welding. Stainless stick welding will require removal of the slag from the inside which is near and impossible. I used a simple T piece with a valve to do mine. All the very best. Cheers J
