In this video, I show you how to make a Sun Hat that’s fully reversible with a back bow. Similar to how to make a bucket hat with a back bow that can be tied tighter making it adjustable. You can even wear your ponytail or hair bun through the opening .
With a few extra steps, sewing will be easier with professional results. No hand stitching needed.
This Sun Hat Pattern fits Head size 22.5” (57cm) - or smaller
The brim and bow straps are sandwiched between the crown sides for a quality finish.
Quilting cotton and non woven fusible interfacing used.

Making this hat was so much fun! The video instructions were priceless! Thank you for designing a pattern and instructions that have given me confidence in an art I was a bit intimidated by. Even my husband commented on how attractive the hat is. I admire your ability as a seamstress, of course, and your ability to not only create this pattern, but provide the detailed video instructions. I compared this project to a good book, couldn't put it down and am sad that it's finished. I will be making more. Thank you!

Hi I'm new here in Maine USA, I took home economics in high school but I just got my first sewing machine for Christmas this year and I'm excited to start using it. I love how you break everything down and make it super simple for beginners. I remember as a small child in the 70s I hated the feeling of polyester fabric and I would break out in hives if I had to wear it, so my Mother bought her first sewing machine and started making all my clothes in soft fabrics like cotton, she even repupoursed my Dad and Grandfather's flannel shirts to make me beautiful patchwork dresses. Now she makes the most wonderful costumes for a dance company and all sorts of fun crazy fabrics to make dresses for her Granddaughter's and Great Granddaughter's. Fun stuffed animals and creatures for all the "Kids" in the family. But the best part of her sewing is when she made my whole wedding parties dresses for the girls and vests/ bowties for the guys. She also altered my dress and added to it when my Daughter was planning to get married. She has made a beautiful wedding dress for a woman who had tried on so many dresses and couldn't find anything for her size. Her dress looked stunning on her. She also has made prom dresses for a young lady,16,who had condrodisplasia and when she went shopping her only options were in the children's section and she wanted to look like the grown up she was, every woman wants to look attractive, sexy even, not a baby. She was so excited that my Mother offered to help her. They picked a dress that the lady always wanted to wear and Mom adapted it to fit her body. She was stunning. People don't think about Sewing Machines/ Sewing Skills changing people's lives but it can.

I really like this design. I bought the pattern from the link in this video. After cutting the pieces out I followed this video to make the hat. It turned out great and I'll enjoy wearing it. I believe I found an error in the video. At 8 min 40 sec you instruct to use a 1" seam allowance to sew the hat layers together. I used 1/2" to avoid catching the ties in the seam.

Thank you for this informative tutorial. I am a visual learner and this really helped. One suggestion, your paper pattern for the brim only says one piece of interfacing. I also cut down the brim for me, but the one I made for my tall friend was perfect. I've made 2, but plan to make many more. Great use of my fabrics.

I just cut out all the pieces in fabric before watching this & thought "join" meant when sewing each piece together. My first Pdf pattern!! Thought I'd get creative & piece them together with different fabrics. My mistake. Lol Thank you for the pattern & video.

This hat fits head 22.5” or smaller . What size do you need? You can always sew seams with ¼” allowance and that will give you extra ½” . Also make sure to print at 100% letter size.

You can sew all seams with a serger but the last step would need to be topstitched. Or you can leave opening in the lining and handstitch it closed.

I just printed out the pdf pattern for this sun hat! Saw it in Facebook and fell in love. Want to make one for my mom, my sister, my DIL, and myself. However, I’ve never used a pdf pattern, so my question is, can I cut it out and tape together as printed? Or do I have to somehow enlarge all the pieces first? My head measurement is 22 inches. Thank you for this lovely hat pattern.

Thanks Mary. You must print out at 100% Letter Size. Double check with the 1” squares on the paper to make sure you have printed out at right size. Cut out and butt edges together to tape together. 3/8” and 1/4” for outer brim edge included already. Cheers

Do you overlap the pdf pattern or are the pieces butted together?

Looks like you must’ve have seen some pattern sale from site that has used my video without authorisation to sell copies of my pattern. I do not sell plastic templates and only patterns from Notches Sewing are genuine. Unfortunately this is an ongoing problem I have with many of my designs. Love this hat and the instructions. Only thing I would say is that some of the things you do that have been sped up are too quick and it would have been very helpful if they were a little slower.

Question: if I want to add 2-4 inches to the brim to make it much wider, what needs to be done so that the hat brim doesn’t become very floppy?

You could use iron on foam instead of interfacing on one side of brim or even add wire along the outer edge. You may want to test with scraps first. Cheers!

I would love to buy and make this, but for girls who are about 10 years old. If I decrease the size by an inch or two on all pieces would that work?? I know that the hat is adjustable, but maybe not enough for kids. Great video!!

There are no written instructions as stated. You can download the transcript of the video if you need. You can also adjust video to a slower playback speed if you need. Pattern is to be printed out at 100% letter size and taped together. Thanks for watching😊

I put a challenge out for our local quilt show. I gave my customers a panel. They got to pick one of two, from the same bolt of fabric. I decided to make this hat out of the panel I choice. I think I will add long ties to the bow, not sure yet. I figured out last night how to make it fit on the panel. I just have one question. I am sure I should butt up the pattern pieces that go together and not overlap them. I do not wish to cut the pattern out wrong. I watched the tutorial and found you used the pattern as a whole. Once we download the pattern, we are to correct pieces together. Am correct, that they are to be butted together?

Hi Debbie, I used medium weight non woven fusible interfacing. If the print out is accurate at 100% Letter size and you are sewing exact ⅜” seams, you shouldn’t have a smaller hat.

It cannot be easily scaled down with printing for such a smaller size. You would need to adjust each piece according.

I also bought the pattern I watched the video and decided I wanted to try and make one. I was taking care of a sick Parent and a couple grandkids and wasn't very attentive when I ordered the pattern, I wanted to order it before I forgot about it lol and didn't read/see there was no written instructions MY mistake- I was told to download the transcript for the directions. So, after jumping through hoops (because I know very little about computers) I finally got it downloaded, a bit of a hassle, I don't understand why they are not just attached to the pattern download, not like it would cost money to include it on a digital file?

Thanks for your purchase. Sorry you found this a hassle. It is much easier to follow along the step by step video tutorial. I do not add written steps as I produce the videos instead. Let me know if you have any other issues. Please be sure to print at 100% letter size and butt edges together when piecing together. No overlapping. Cheers!
