@Vibescribe Muso Thank you so much for being a student! To honor your commitment and support, I've done the same. Today (8/22/2021) I just uploaded a brand new 14 minute lesson in the course (found at htts://www.MyKeysToMusic) explaining how to create the Synth Brass (Africa/Toto) sound using the Nord Wave 2. Not only that, I've made the program download available so you'll have immediate access to it for upload to your Wave 2. At the end of the lesson, I explore some other possibilities on how you can use that sound for other expressions and for solo work too with some minor tweaks. Hope you like it. Please report back here if it met your expectations. Thanks! - Marc 🙏🏽 🎹

@bigbenskeys. Hello Ben, and greetings from Southern California, USA! I've been to Ireland, but not Scotland yet - however, it's on the long-term travel list! Thank you for your ideas and compliments - they're appreciated! I met a few of the folks from Nord back in 2020 during their exhibition at the NAMM trade show not far from me in Anaheim, California. At that time, the channel was a bit smaller, and only one of their people had heard of me or seen my videos. I have plans to go to the next NAMM (not this year, but next year in 2025), where I could potentially forge a stronger relationship with them. Truth be told, I somewhat enjoy my independence from them as well. This allows me to be publicly critical and candid when and where I need to be (it's rare that I have a bone to pick, but it does happen). So, because I'm not directly endorsed by Nord, I can provide my audience and students with the "honest truth," which might be harder to come by if I were an official partner with them. So, my obscurity in this way has advantages in cases like this. As I said, I'm nearly always genuinely enthusiastic and positive towards the product, which explains my numerous videos, but when there are areas for improvement, I'm not shy about announcing that and telling it like it is. So, that explains some of the background here on my end. Which Nord board do you use or are planning on getting?

Thanks for the comment and reminder about Rush Vita Signs. The ending of Vital Sings has a "classic synth strings" sound I think more than a synth brass sound but they have some similar characteristics. Your comment was a good reminder for me just how many great songs Rush created over the years. And on that topic, if you're in to Rush, be sure to check out the other Rush videos I've done over the years as well. I've listed them all here for your convenience if you haven't already checked them out: Rush: (The Camera Eye): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9l5hr2ZzMi9gIk.html Rush: (Tom Sawyer) part 1: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mpmkpLOhrLizlac.html Rush: (Tom Sawyer) part 2: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fpOXl5eGtr22j2w.html Rush: (Subdivisions): www.patreon.com/posts/rush-40401827? @@danielmikkelsen5470 Thanks for the background. Well, from one Rush fan to another, I wanted to bring to your attention a new course offering that I just released over the weekend 2021-06-14. It's called: "The Rush Collection for the Nord Stage 3." It features 7 Rush tunes with various sounds from each selection. All the programs are downloadable for the Stage 3 and there is a lesson for each song (just like what you may have seen here on KZfaq). In any case, I figured it was time to put them in a collection of their own for the die-hard fans who want to bring the experience to their own Nord Stage 3. Xanadu is featured in that collection in fact. In any case, great to get to know you - we sure do miss Neal. Besides Rush, Yes is another one of my favorite groups. The moment I saw that Getty was playing bass with Yes during the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction for Yes, my mind was blown. Getty is the ONLY guy who could fill in for Chris Squire on bass. Check it out if you haven't already: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bsWYdMurydGRmGw.html. (and of course, this video features the one and only Rick Wakeman on keys).

@@MyKeysToMusic I was also really struck when I heard about Neil Peart's passing, when being a Rush fan so many years and air drumming since teenager.. Thanks again for the info, I'm still hoping to get a Stage 3 some time, but have get back up from the covid time first. Maybe I have to settle for the Lead A1 first, we'll see. It's so cool seeing Geddy play with yes, thanks for that link, I don't even know much from Yes, but now I'm definitely going to explore and listen to more of their songs. I am always a fan of prog rock! Cheers

Hi! Marc, I'm am gearing towards Stage 3 Compact because of the weight & price compared to the HP76, but I am not sure if the keybed is decent enough to play Piano and EP lines with sensitivity, that sometimes 16 note runs are more effective with heavier keybed. How do you feel regarding this? I saw you have used both in your videos. Cheers from Junko!!!
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Hello @Junko Kinoko thanks for your question. Well, I think I'm able to play with a lot of sensitivity with the Stage 3 Compact with no problem. I think, however, if you ask a person who has been playing with weighted keys all their life, they might be quick to disagree with me. So, it really does depend on how you play and what your expectations are. Incidentally, I find that the faster the run, the easier it is to play with the Compact versus the HP. However, I've been playing semi-weighted keys nearly all my life and I think that's what I'm used to. I have played acoustic piano a bit too sure, but I find that the way I play, I'm more comfortable overall with the Compact. If you ask 10 keyboardists this same question, you'll likely get 10 different answers! I like the HP for when I'm trying to exercise my fingers/hands and I'm trying to build strength. I like the Compact when it's time to rip and solo with speed or when I plan to have an extended practice session or an extended gig. Hope that helps - drop a line here once you've made your decision if you'd like.

Hi Marc, Is this "slight pitch bend at the begin of the note" also possible on the NS2?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 6 ай бұрын
@merlijnduynstee Hello Merlijn! So, I had a look at the entire manual of the Nord Stage 2 this morning, and there doesn't appear to be a way to adjust the pitch (bend the note) at the beginning. To do this with the other Nord products, you would use the Mod Envelope and target a configuration that allows you to adjust the "pitch" of an oscillator. The Stage 2 does have the ability to target the filter amount (frequency cutoff), the sync amount, the shape amount, and even the amount of FM to apply (feedback and frequency ratio). But, to the best of my knowledge gained directly from the manual and looking at the front panel picture itself, I believe there is no way to modulate the pitch through an envelope, which is how these slight bends are created at the beginning of a note. *Other Solutions:* 1) You could create (or find an existing sample) with the bend in the notes already baked in. You might be able to find something in the Nord Sample Library 2.0 for this. Look in the Synth section. It won't be described in detail, indicating which ones have a bend, so you might have to audition them all. You might find something on the Nord User forum or a sound pack somewhere. Sometimes, these samples/sounds have a nickname of "Lyle Mays" or just "Lyle" in the name since he sort of made that sound famous with his music. 2) Using a small amount of Glide while in Mono or Legato Mode "sort of" spoofs a bit of the pitch bend effect - although this is really a stretch at times, and of course, you would have to be in Mono mode, which may not be what you are looking for. 3) Trade in your Stage 2 for a Stage 3, Stage 4, or a Nord Wave 2. 4) Add a Nord Lead A1 to your setup - it can modulate pitch via the envelope out of the box. 5) Add a synth VST/computer setup and produce the sounds you are looking for that way. 6) Add a lower-cost hardware synth to your setup that can do this. Note: The Lead A1 and Stage 3 boards can modulate pitch using only the "Classic" oscillators. The LFO can target pitch but only for the classic oscillators. The Wave 2 and Stage 4 boards, on the other hand, can modulate pitch against ANY sound source, including the "Classic" oscillators, FM, Wave, Samples, etc. In addition, the LFO can target pitch as well for any sound source. So, when it comes to pitch manipulation, the Wave 2 and Stage 4 are quite a bit more powerful than the others. One more word about this. Keep in mind that outside the usefulness of slightly bending the pitch at the beginning of a note, I have found very little practical need for drastic pitch manipulation for day to day use. You can, however, create a wide variety of sound FX or spacey/video game tapestries with no problem! If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. Good luck! 🎹 ⚠P.S. For those who made it this far down on this comment, you can check out my "Making the Lyle Mays Sound" video here to better understand the concept of the slight pitch bend on each note and how that works, how it sounds, and why it's so cool! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdd5mtyYtKvJoGg.htmlfeature=shared

@@merlijnduynstee Good idea. If your VST stuff is already at your fingertips, that's the way to go! I was wondering... In my Africa video here, I'm not bending the pitch, I'm adjusting the frequency cutoff at the beginning of the note. The NS2 can do that without any problem. Pitch, on the other hand, is what I think you are talking about which is back to that Lyle Mays video mentioned in my first response.
@merlijnduynstee

@@MyKeysToMusic I’ve followed the steps from the tutorial in Mainstage’s Retro Synth and got pretty close to what I was looking for. It even allows the Lyle Mays style bending. Hey,there @Hot 88s long time no hear! So, the beginning of Beat It sounds to me like an FM Synth sound. Almost like a synth bell - very unique sound. Probably a challenge to create on the Stage 3 but maybe if we used the FM portion. Hmmm. Actually, it might be easier on the Nord Wave 2 now that I think about it. I would like to recreate the gorgeous synth sound heard in the Live Stop Making Sense performance of Crosseyed and Painless by Talking Heads which I think is a Prophet 5 synth brass which has an LFO Oscillator or something. @@MauriceMossisitnot Ah ok. So I agree with what you said here. We are hearing a "synth brass" sound with most if not all of the filter frequency allowed. There is also heavy vibrato (where the pitch wavers immediately upon playing the note or shortly thereafter). The answer is yes if you can get your LFO to target "pitch". Then set the rate and amount relative to what you hear in the video. Obviously, if Serum VST has vibrato already built in, I'd start with that feature first.
