A tutorial on how I made a light switch from a water shut off valve. All the fittings, including the valve, are 3/4".

Great explanation. Wish everyone would do it like this without loud music! 😀

Thanks for the great vid! I just built a 3-way version and, for anyone who is interested, if you use a 1" valve, you only have to grind out a section of that "collar" at the bottom and the whole switch will fit in with no modifications. Then when the threaded shaft of the valve is cut off to fit, it is just about the same size as the knob on the switch (my switch was almost identical to this one, but 3-way). So I just epoxied the switch in place and used a tight fitting rubber hose to connect the threaded shaft to the switch knob, everything coming together as the top was screwed down. I'm using 1" to 3/4" bushings in the valve ends to fit the rest of my project. I haven't finished my build yet, but the switch seems solid. A little simpler assembly for someone that doesn't mind the valve/switch being a little on the big side!

Just a tip, a short piece of 1/4-3/8 vinyl tubing on the switch to the stem helps the epoxy stay in place and provides a mechanical bond as well. Very good video my friend.

Got a idea for epoxy not running down switch shaft. Cut a tiny sleeve out of something like vacuum line or oxygen tank line, and slip over shaft to hold a little bit of epoxy and just leave it thier after epoxy has dried. Love your idea .Going to implement it into a lamp I am going to build for my plumber freind

Great video thanks for sharing. If you don't mind me asking what epoxy do you find is best? Are you using the likes of JB weld?

I used a 2 part 5 minute epoxy, not sure what brand, but they are all about the same.

Have you ever noticed this type of switch making slight popping sounds when you turn it? Other than the clicking sound.

@@HandyGuy2016 thank you for the quick response! I just did this same design and mine occasionally makes a small pop when I turn the light off… not sure why yet. Could my bulb be to high of wattage or something?

I'm not sure, possible though.

Great, except that the valve should seemingly appear to turn on or off water flow. This design just terminates at the cap. Operating the valve handle would normally do nothing.
