Don heads back into the shop to finish building a wheel dressing mount for our O.D. grinder. Last week, Don did some rough machining on a couple components. This week, Don machines the main mounting block on the Bridgeport, grinds the other components into size using the O.D. grinder, and attaches the mount to the tailstock of the O.D grinder.

This is a great "learn the machines" job! And when you are done, you got a tool! Also, hi Glen! Has Don let you touch any of the machines since this came out?

At 6:07 it looks to me you have at least pieces of a continuous-measurement Arnold gage on this puppy. Could you do a video showing Arnold-class gages in action, and also steady rests on OD grinders? You also could make a field trip to a crankshaft grinding shop to show the same thing, if anyone close had a decently clean shop environment.

Hi Don. Thanks for a great video as always. I like how you solve some of the simple but annoying shop problems. It's always amazing what someone can do with some thought and effort. We miss Glenn. I love you and he bantering back and forth. Is he actually retired or just moved on to something else? Either way, please pass along my regards. Thanks, John

Great job Don, using the dead center as a backing block was clever. Are you going to keep the Allen bolts, I would maybe replace them with low profile Kipp levers, at least on the tailstock block ?

Hi. Since this is the last video I have seen on grinding I would like to ask if you can, if possible, make a video on engine crank shaft grinding? Especially if you have any way to do it on a normal OD grinder. Thank you for some very informative and educational videos so far.

Don, another really great video clip with heaps of experience leading the way. A couple of newbie questions please. The block that you mounted on the tailstock, I know you eyeballed it and machined all surfaces I'm just wondering if you did any prep work to the tailstock surfaces you mounted it to as they looked painted to me. Also did you have to have the block and hence the shaft inside it parallel to the centre of the tailstock as I am thinking that if it wasnt true then wouldnt the diamond cut unevenly across the face of the grinding wheel (hope that makes sense) Also, could you briefly discuss the drills you used, I am a little confused between the number and alphabet drills and finally, a quick look around your Brideport Mill and lathe just to see where and how you store your tools and stuff as I have fininished my Mill overhaul now and want to sort stuff out and am a great believer in not reinventing the wheel. Incidentally, I suggest your "eyeballing" would probably be within a few thou.... I added a thou for your recycled teenager status.. Many thanks Sir, NSW, Australia
@SuburbanToolInc
@SuburbanToolInc 8 жыл бұрын
+Gordon Agent We did not do any prep work to the tailstock surface. No, the movement of the diamond across the wheel is dependent upon the ways of the grinder, anything else doesn't matter. The diamond used will always be parallel to the wheel. In regards to drills, we used three types: fractional, numerical, and alpha. Thanks for the questions, and thanks for watching.

Hey Don how come the coolant line doesn't have a fishtail nozzle to spread the coolant across the full width of the grinding wheel ? I also noticed you seem to grind in one direction only , the machines i used to run we used to set up end stops and run in both directions with the machine using its hydraulic traverse and feed the wheel in by hand .

Why aren't you using a half center in the tailstock?

+SuburbanTool Inc I'm sorry, Don. Now that I re-read my post I see it was a stupid "gotcha" question. Of course you'd use a half-center if you had one. However, even carbide half centers poop out and of course no-one mentions the need for fresh half centers (end mills, toilet paper, spill kits, ear plugs, files, soft jaws, coffee, etc) to the buyer. I been on both ends of that hassle.

Put a t-handle or a nice knob with threads in place of that allen screw that locks the shaft and then you won't ever be wasting time hunting for that allen wrench.
