How To Make a Wooden Mug (Step By Step)

Today I carved my first mug from wood. Considering I have never done this before, it turned out pretty good, and holds liquid just fine. The chiseling took quite a while but it's possible to complete something like this in just one day. I took 2 days. The only issue I ran into was my wood not being dried enough and I got some cracks after chiseling. Luckily they didn't get too bad and I was able to patch them.

is it still in a good shape? no cracks and mould? If not, did you use another layers of beeswax later?

Nice work! Question: How do you get the bottom of the mug flat?

In one of the early steps I used the pull down saw to cut out the exact size piece of wood I needed. When I made those cuts it made the top and the bottom flat. Hope this helps!

@@JD-jc2is Gottcha. The inside bottom of the mug actually isn't flat, and it doesn't really need to be. Getting it completely flat would take a lot more work and isn't really necessary.

what size gouge are you using there - is there more than one size used in the video?

I did use a few different sizes. I used a 1inch, a 3/4inch, and a half inch I believe. As long as they are the rounded ones and not flat you'll be good. It's definitely possible to make the whole thing with a half inch but its easier taking larger pieces off with the 1 inch ya know.
