In this Video i wanna share how I make Accurate Drawing Outline to help ensure the perfect proportions to begin portrait drawing. Disclaimer: this just my personal preference and every artist has his own take in terms of making outlines, some do Freehand Drawing, Grid Line Method, use drawing tools like tracing using led light tablet and pantograph.

For me po, freehand method is used when you are confident or when you like to sketch freely po. Using guidelines like pictures, grid method or tracing method, pantograph ay nakakatulong sa ating skills lalo na sa muscle memory, efficiency, and accuracy po. Art is art as long as you are honest and passionate doing it.

I am 43 and never been a commissioned artist...life changes things sometimes. I never had a formal art education, only 4 years through high school. We were introduced to all the techniques mentioned here as well as projectors. I always felt guilty about using all the tools that allowed me to achieve what others could freehand. However, I worked hard and was able to draw proportional and accurate enough for others to appreciate and want me to draw. Over the years I quit drawing because it took such dedication to a piece that I was unable to stay focused and would become dissatisfied or disillusioned. I honestly wish I had the perspective years ago that I have today or at least someone with this perspective to guide me. Here is what sets well with my soul; I am confident that I am capable of drawing accurate and proportional outlines, so I give myself permission to use tools and techniques to accomplish the task quicker...by possibly days. I continue to freehand drawings, for fun and practice. However, I have purchased a light box, pantograph, been experimenting with tracing techniques, because I don’t want my 13 year old daughter to be discouraged, like I was. She is very talented and I explain to her to keep doing freehand, but use the tools to sharpen your best skills. Don’t focus on your shortcomings, it will come with time. For me, I missed using the tools to better my freehand and ultimately never became a commissioned artist. Looking back, I could have saved myself a lot of heartbreak by not boxing myself in. I am a custom woodworker and in my line of work, we use tools that are more effective, efficient, and safer than generations ago and that’s wise. Still others choose to take the time to do everything by hand. While both have the same end product, each has to be convinced in their own mind. Roman 14:5

Awesome words of wisdom sir. What's help me over the years is Triangulation, block in method, negative spaces, gesture, in all forms it matters the way you approach the the Art. your to bring 3D to 2D on paper and give it back 3D form with depth. As tattooist freehand=the approach you take to get desired results.

For me, kahit anong form or technique ang gamitin either freehand, grid, or tracing are still acceptable.

Para sa akin tracing is not cheating. Same din sa grid which i prefer personally pag nag drawing. Grid line is a method of scaling.

Drawing a beautiful face freehand n getting the proportions right ,first try , is master status to me. Grids n tracing is depriving n limiting yourself to true mastery . I find shading n details the most simple. That's my take on it anyway. I do find all art interesting to watch though. I will say you have grid technique on lock!! Really good 👍

I’m an artist too and I agree with you! I use the same technique: TRACING on my drawings, especially on my commissioned drawings. And I have never considered it as cheating. When I create an artwork, one thing that I consider the most is the CORRECT PROPORTION. Because when you achieve the right proportion, nothing won’t go wrong. (Plus the right shadow, contrast and the ability of the artist to blend and choose the right colors/palette.) I’m poor so I can’t afford the ‘tracing table’ that you have. However, what I usually do is to lay the printed image on top of plastic/glass with a light (flashlight) under that. Lol. It works like magic! On the other hand, I use FREEHAND drawing when it’s my free time/leisure time.

I completed a botanical illustration course by distance learning and they taught me how to prepare graphite layout paper, like you've just demonstrated. I've just purchased artists graphite paper from Ebay made by a well known artist supply manufacturer. I use my phone to create a graph for proportions, but need to draw by hand to get it right while i'm learning. I don't consider myself an artist yet. I think it is best to use what's best for you, as getting it wrong often discourages us to complete the work.

For me tracing is cheating when I was in elementary and high school. Yung literal na ibabakat SA reference (anime) Yung bond paper 😂. But for me nung namumulat na ako SA art industry where you need to use guidelines, grid and tracing for accuracy. Medyo rare Yung freehand if you are great or veteran na SA pagdrawing Ng portraiture. I used to draw portrait of Arnold in terminator with Free-hand. Ngayon I understand na mas reliable Ang tracing, guidelines and grid dahil Ang mas kailangan Yung highlights shadows and tone. Thanks for sharing your advice and being honest to us your supporters. It's helping us to create a perfect proportions lalo na sa commissions kase mas gusto ng mga clients naten na kuhang kuha talaga ang shape ng face nila, at saka ang gridding naman is also tracing pero it takes a lot of time to create grid lines, tracing saves time and it helps to create perfect shape of face. I do tracing. Its not cheating if we express art in any way. Itd still an art. When u do freehand. Its a choice

I agree with your thoughts. It is not cheating although we plagiarize, so for me its not.

Basta realistic style of portraiture, parte talaga ng process ung tracing for ur preparatory outlines, even old renaissance masters like Michelangelo, Van Dyke and Leonardo use tracing techniques, D old Dutch Hyperrealist Vermeer even use high tech tracing device called Camera Obscura to achieve perfect outlines.

Freehand is okay for me kapag for practice or personal use lang yung drawing and hindi artista yung subject kasi di naman makikita yung difference. For commissioned portraits, agree ako using other methods like tracing kasi mas mapapabilis yung process at may expectation na kailangang imeet para masatisfy ang mga clients.
