My shop has a massive echo, and this week I'm starting the process of fixing this issue with some stylish acoustic wall panels that no only help with the sound but also give my empty gray wall some character.
These are the panels I got here locally: www.biltema.no/bil---mc/bilti...

If you had some space behind the foam where you could put LED lights on the back you would have some cooling lighting with the sound dampening.

The easiest way to hang up sound foam, is to put blue painters tape on backwards, then you can just slap them on the wall. If the sound foam do not have any adhesive, then use double sided carpet tape, and then put on the blue painters tape backwards on the carpet tape. They stay up forever, and are easy to take down agian.

Cool vid! I lined my CNC enclosure with acoustic ceiling tiles. They worked like a charm. I'm thinking of following your lead and cutting some to add some sound absorption to the walls of my shop. Thanks for the ideas!

This looks beautiful and functional. I live in an apartment and trying to find some ways to make cheep panels that look aesthetically pleasing for my office/record space. Since I live near the pool it can get loud outside and anything to help soften the noise and help quiet during recordings will be beneficial. Gotta go to Home Depot now and see what I can dig up to use. :)

These are nice, looking into doing the same for home studio, wanting to make like three vertical rectangles with printed photo of some models that fit across all three. A painters drop cloth might be the cheapest fabric I've been able to source, now printing on it? another question.

Nice idea, thinking about something similar for my living room / makeshift studio. I'm quite sensitive to dust though, and I wonder how you handle cleaning those uneven textures and edges especially in a workshop. From an acoustics perspective, you might want to have your backboard a centimeter smaller to create a little bit of overhang where sound can bounce off the wall and be absorbed again. It will only help with the highs, but it's still something. Also, it would allow you to glue some hidden LED backlighting around the periphery some some extra pizzazz. And maybe leave an island sea to counterbalance that lonely island you have? Just some random ideas.

I think you may get better performance from these panels if you try to space them out a bit more on the wall, effectively attenuating more nodal points on that wall. Seriously awesome panel design though. I could see using these with a french cleat system to be able to setup for vocals when needed, and spread out when recording the room. Very flexible, much props to you!

The MDF mount board is a bit overkill. I used poster board. Much lighter and less permanent. Also that style of foam tends to oxidize and the nice whites turn dingy yellowish after a while.

Nice video - the only issue I have is the waste! You could certainly get lots of hexagons (& the 4 hexagon ply templates) from one sheet as a whole, with leftover offcuts created bundled together in a frame with some fabric over the top. Anyone that doesn't have a bandsaw can keep going with the jigsaw as shown, or it's coping saw time! 🪚

HELP! 5 QUESTIONS Does anyone think having panels with an open back would help reduce some of the airborne noise coming from traffic outside? And would having the panel a certain distance from the wall (e.g. 2") help with reducing airborne noise from outside by deadening it in the panel? I am hoping to deaden some of this airborne traffic noise in the audio of my videos. I am going to be doing videos of a person speaking and I have a really beautiful looking Room but the traffic has a lot of a low rumbling frequencies I need to reduce. I also would like to know, is there is a microphone that would be better for isolating the speaker away from those airborne noises? If panels may help reduce some of that airborne traffic noise coming in how thick should I make them? Lastly does anyone have any tips on reducing the airborne traffic coming into this room, other than demolitioning the walls to decouple new walls. I keep thinking that there must be some sort of way to erect acoustic panels/partitions or curtains around the subject in an attractive way or less preferably an acoustic fence around the front and sides of the building. Or maybe even some sort of dence acoustic shade (e.g. MLV) outside of the building that I can pull down during sessions. I'm hoping that simply putting panels up on the walls and maybe some standing panels/partitions around the subject will be sufficient along with some sort of microphone that will focus mostly on the subject. Please help!

Nvidia has some AI noise canceling plug in that works with their RTX cards, iirc. Seen a few vids demoing it and it seems to be awesome at removing background noise. Might want to check it out. As for isolating from low frequency sound, such as traffic, the only thing that will work is putting more mass into your walls, ceiling, and floors. Basically reconstructing your room completely, or at least sandwiching a few layers of drywall. Either way, it will be really costly and involve a lot of work.

You really should be using a good respirator when cutting MDF, it has a lot of nastiness in it that you should NOT be breathing in, even if you're only working with it occasionally. Your insulation is mostly a white color, and your walls, a light grey. I would have painted the edges of the MDF black to make them really pop. I would have also put about an inch of separation between each of the panels which would have added a design element, and spread out your insulation a bit further.

This hurt a little watch. AL you said you didn't want sticky on the wall and then you put sticky tack on the back of the panel. If you have some panels left over the, curve them around the back of your camera like you did over your head. Your going to need at least 50% coverage on all surfaces to get to a recording studio standard reverberation time.
