The term for using notes only in the scale/key you’re using is “diatonic”, so the chords Nik created in the beginning are called diatonic chords. One great example is in Asking Alexandria’s Stand Up And Scream album. The harmonizations are diatonic thirds from each other based off the d minor scale.

What I love doing when writting riffs is to imply the dominat chord of the scale at the end of the riff. So for example if I write in harmonic minor (99% of the time) I use the V chord which is a major chord to end the riff and go back to the tonic. Super strong and tasty pull.
