I really appreciate that you don't overlay your videos with music. It can be quite strenuous to understand someone talking if the background music is almost as loud as the person. So thank you!

I am just about to take my first stab at making an 18th century shirt, with nothing but some directions from a friend who says it's easy, and one of his shirts to look at. I'm so glad y'all posted this!

I started sewing in March and I just made my first fully handsewn garment: a linen Regency-era shift. I loved the process! Hopefully it's strong enough to not fall apart....haha! I think this might be my next project for a nice loose shirt to wear for the hellish Australian summer fast approaching.

Am I the only one who loved the math for the shift sew along? I'm a little disappointed it's a pattern this time. Guess you can't please everyone! 😅
@hjaponi

I wish they had offered both. It looks to be mostly rectangles and I really don't need to pay for a paper pattern for that.
@bonitalydia
@bonitalydia 3 жыл бұрын
@@hjaponi I wouldn't mind paying if I knew that the pattern had the dimensions for each size printed on it, but I'd rather not try to trace out a rectangle when it would be more accurate for me to measure directly on the fabric.
@hjaponi
@hjaponi 3 жыл бұрын
@@bonitalydia I agree. Measurement dimensions are critical! That said, It isn't difficult for the pattern user to measure the pattern pieces. However, if the pattern included the dimensions, we wouldn't need to print, cut, and tape pieces together.

I didn't do the shift but very much prefer the math to the patterns. I wonder if they could post written shift instructions for those of us who prefer math?

Super excited about another sew along! Even though your customers have requested patterns, will you still be discussing how the shirts were (most likely) historically constructed as you did with the shift sew along? Thanks!

If you are referring to cutting it was actually identical as the same linen widths were woven and used for shirting.

@@BurnleyandTrowbridge I do live in the UK, but international shipping (especially form the US) shunts the price up hugely. The time it takes to get to me is a factor too, so I try not to buy from outside the UK where possible.

Am currently sewing a shirt. It’s kind of a mess 🤣🤣🤣. Wear a thimble! My stitches went from appalling to pretty decent through this project, but it’s a mock up. Too small for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sometimes treads in fabric are crossing under an angle. So when you pull the tread you won't end up with squer but more like diamond shape. When you sew your sleaves, for example they want lay properly but will pull.

It's a linen shirt dress that was gifted to her by family members and is from Old Navy. She says it's quite a few years old though, so probably not available any longer.

What were color options like for middle class men? Did they all have generally white or off-white shirts? Or did they choose different colors to taste, like reds, blues, greens, browns...etc? Did they choose prints or only solids?

Hi Jules! This Sew Along is the companion pattern to the shirt pattern on our website. You can see a finished shirt both in the thumbnail and video introduction and then of course the pattern itself has a model wearing a shirt made from the pattern on the cover. Christina wasn't making the shirt for herself in this video (she wears shifts in her 18th century life instead) so it wouldn't have fit her had she tried to model it at the end of the series.

Hello! I bought the pattern last year and am finally cutting it out and taping it together. Do you cut the paper so that the circles meet, tape it together, then cut the patter size that fits? Or do you cut out the right size at the lines, then tape it together? If there were directions, I must have missed them. Thanks in advance!

How much does the Fabrice weight, or wich weight span would be recommend for a Shirt Like this?
@BurnleyandTrowbridge
@BurnleyandTrowbridge Жыл бұрын
Hi you can use a light to medium weight linen (roughly 6 to 8 ounces) to make a shirt. 2 1/2 yards to 3 1/2 yards usually will cover most sizes if the fabric is 56-60 inches wide

How does an English shirt differ from a French or Low Countries' shirt?
@BurnleyandTrowbridge
@BurnleyandTrowbridge Жыл бұрын
The general ideas of cutting and assembling a shirt are likely very similar across regions. It is important to note, however, that shirts are often part of cottage industry meaning there are very likely some variations to approach that might have been made "in the moment" based on the individual maker. For instance, the cutting diagram might have been slightly altered to better accommodate the textile available (either in width or available yardage), the order of operations might have been varied based on preference, etc. Without a deeper study into the historical record, though, it would be difficult to set definitive characteristics at this time.

"Gendered skills" is a rediculous notion. The aproach to using and obtaining skills might differ by gender but the skills themselves are for everyone.
@timetravelingtrousseau6338
@timetravelingtrousseau6338 3 жыл бұрын
I believe the term 'gendered skills' is being used in an anthropological sense (not to form any judgement) to convey the difference between our societal understanding of gender and gender roles to those of the 18th century, i.e. pink is seen a predominantly female color today, but 100+ years ago, it was considered a male color, etc..
@BurnleyandTrowbridge
@BurnleyandTrowbridge 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Susan- We agree that skills are for everyone and that gendering skills is a pretty ridiculous thing that happens! We also think it's important to acknowledge that unfortunately this doesn't stop it from happening in many cultures around the world. In our video, we highlighted this tidbit because today in much of the "Western World" many fiber and needle arts are considered "traditionally feminine" and are perceived by society to be associated with/reflect femininity on those who practice the skill. It might even deter certain people from trying out a skill because it has been deemed societally inappropriate. As TimeTravelingTrousseau pointed out, skills are not exempt from this societal codification and it happens to other things such as clothing colors and styles, too. We thought it important to note that in the 18th century this was not the case, and plain sewing was taught to all young children regardless of gender as part of a basic skills education. That's not to say that *many* other things in the 18th century weren't gendered, as they absolutely were, just that this particular skill was not one of them.
