An instructional video showing How to make your own reliable and safe Automatically opening & closing Chicken hutch/coop door.
This video demonstrates two similar doors, each made from different materials, and slightly different components, and then clearly & easily shows how you can build the Auto Chicken door yourself, step by step, using components that require little or no soldering.
Our very first Auto chicken door which we built years ago is still operating today, and has done without hiccups or problems.
A long time ago I went onto "Backyard Poultry" and saw many difficult to follow electrical diagrams. I instead designed my own system, and posted an electrical diagram, which has since been used by others, modified, and put onto you tube.
This system, as shown above, is my own original system. Whilst it has been suggested that you can get away with using only one relay switch, this system uses two relays, and the reason is simple: Two relay switches means that the system uses less electricity, which can be vital for reliability when using battery power. This system doesn't need to keep a relay switch charged/connected for up to 12 hours. Instead, each relay switch only draws electricity for about 1 - 2 minutes, every 24 hours, thus saving a great deal of battery power, and increasing the reliability of the system - paramount for the safety of our birds, especially when predators are about. And for the very minimal cost of an extra relay switch, why wouldn't you do it properly, and make the system more reliable?
We hope you have a lot of fun building this, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from having a reliable Automatically opening & closing Chicken hutch/coop door.
Best of Luck,
David Poland.

Google seems to wait for a week to show me these videos, this one just shows up but my search never found it. Anyway, good job, and pretty simple design for DIY. I have found a early 2000's volvo rear window setup is pretty much already setup to open/close, just needs the timer and motor controller. It goes too fast and is too strong, to run it at 12v, but it works at 5v too. But I'm doing one now that would be easier for others to copy using stepper motors as they are cheap brand new and will swing open a door, the steppers are not too strong so they just 'slip' if a chicken is in the doorway. This requires another lock mechanism so the door can't be opened by force. I've watched lots of videos..some designs don't lock and can be pushed up if something tries hard enough.

To be honest I really hate the string type doors almost as much as I hate the vehicle antenna doors, BUT I like yours very much. I even come back to your video from time to time just to watch it like a favorite movie. I even recommend it to others who want a string door. I just add that hey should use two timers like yours in stead of one. much easier to wire. But we have already conversed about that. One thing tho that I have always wondered. You say "Two relay switches means that the system uses less electricity, which can be vital for reliability when using battery power." I would be very interested in an explanation. TY.

Think I just figured it out. What I learned. 12 v means 12 volt. Timer light comes on with 6 v but wouldn't actually switch. Need to press limit switches when connecting to battery. Use NC normally closed connection to the one on the side. There are short wires connecting the relays. Stared with 20 gauge wire, but ended up using 14 gauge (which was tight). Haven't found d sail track if people have suggestions. Screws to attach my 15 rpm motor were metric #4 (I think). Ordered another Relay will set it up soon.

Is the relay in the timer still drawing power all day. All you need is a timer a DPDT relay, two diodes and two limit switches. Way simple. Add photocell and a SPDT switches and you can go from timer or dawn till dusk.

Where would you put the diodes?
@AztecWarrior69
@AztecWarrior69 4 жыл бұрын
@@adamesch6834 You place the diodes at the limit switches or you can put them in a control box. It is a bit "complicated" to explain in writing( for me anyway). I have a video called "Basic Car Automatic Antenna Wiring Diagram". The diodes are wired basically the same way as if you were to wire a coop door. This way is still good and there are definite pros of doing it with diodes. But I actually rediscovered how to do it with no diodes and using only two SPDT timers (Video is up) and of course the limit switches. If it helps please let me know.

very neat looking. Thanks for the wiring diagram at the end, but It still needs a lot of figuring out as all the switches aredrawn in open position, so no idea what is Normally closed and normaly open or which limit switch goes where, but I'll figure it out :-) yep... figured it out. The timer stays activated for the entire time you want the door open and when it switches off, it closes the door
@obnubdonbstub8166
@obnubdonbstub8166 7 жыл бұрын
He says the relays are activated only while the door is moving. Apparently it doesn't take power to keep the timer in the active state. Some kind of flip-flop I guess.
@AztecWarrior69
@AztecWarrior69 4 жыл бұрын
@@obnubdonbstub8166 The way it works is that the timer goes from NC to NO, and closes the connection, Then it goes through the NC limit switch, and on to the relay and it turns on. The relay Is set up so BOTH the POS and NEG are disconnected in the rest state, both get connected in the active state, which turns on the motor. When the Upper limit switch is reached the current is cut off. The same happens then the door closes. So yes the external relays are off when the motor is off. However the relay in the timer is still on when the door it up.

I just had an idea for the pulley with the tightening screw: make one from a drill depth stop collar. Simply cut some circles from some hard plastic (use sharp knife or hole saw) and glue the circles to the side of the drill depth stop collar. Or buy a wooden or plastic pulley and drill your own screw hole.

Thanks for the video. It looks like your timer has an AC input but the circuit shows DC from the battery. I purchased a timer that looks exactly the same as the one in the video but it only works when 240 AC is applied. Can you confirm your design is using 12 VDC into the timer?
@obnubdonbstub8166
@obnubdonbstub8166 7 жыл бұрын
I think I have the same timer but the documentation sucks. It appears the 240 V rating is for the switch contacts. There's a "power" parameter which is 4.5VA. If that referred to the switch then it would work out to 19mA load capacity, but elsewhere it says the load capacity is 16A so I think the 4.5 refers to the clock and maybe it should be 4.5VAC input. If that's true most likely there's a bridge rectifier in there so you could apply 4.5 dc in either polarity. But I'm guessing. I haven't hooked it up to power yet. The ebay vendor had it listed as as 12V clock.
@GregAltena
@GregAltena 7 жыл бұрын
I ended up just getting two 12 vdc relay/timers. (like this www.ebay.com.au/itm/12V-16A-LCD-Digital-Display-Programmable-Timer-Switch-Fit-for-Water-Pump-Fans-/172243236970?hash=item281a7f386a) Set them to run for 1 minute once a day. One timer for door up and the other for door down. Biggest pain to make and attach to the motor was the pulley.

Hello and thank you for your reply. Yes I realize that this was not something to be purchased in normal shop :) I now use a wheel that I found on eBay (with set screw) and then I glued plastic from ice box as walls for the pulley. Not as good as the one you have, but it works. But I have modified this with Orvibo (app Controlled) so I open the door with the app instead of "normal" timer. Orvibo S20 also have timer settings in the app so you can choose to open/close with timer or manual. Frank

I like what you have come up with here but do you think that it will keep predators out?

The best of a very large bunch - and Aussie too. As with comments, have found all of your parts on e- bay EXCEPT the pulley ! And reasonably priced. Micro switches - one red, one black. Any difference ?. Could not find red. A Brilliant you tube if you could add the parts nos. and source. Making it too easy for us ? This door to keep geese safe and save me the early morning "stagger out". Thanks .Bundaberg. Have not done these "comments" before. Can You email re. red micro and pulley ?

+nick venters I had the pulley's made at our local engineering workshop, out of Nylon. They were only a couple of dollars each as I ordered 6 of them. You could try your local engineering shops perhaps. As for the micro switches, the colour is irrelevant, and simply how each manufacturer makes the same product. Incidentally, they are cheap and once you've used them, you'll find lots of uses for them. Best of luck.

+Andrew Roch I would get a plastic or wooded spool and drill a hole for a screw. You can probably get away without a spool and just let the string wind itself on the motor shaft.
