Pro tip for insulation, get a sheet of 2" thick styrofoam board, cut it out to be as close to the exact size of the top of the opening of the tub, then attach it to a sheet of plywood/MDF so that when you're not in the tub it will keep critters and bugs out, and can keep the cold in.

Months ago I told my uncle I was going to use a heavy duty tote box for ice submersion, and he proceeded to tell me that it would rupture. Two days later on his day off, we went to a farm supplier and bought the 150 Gallon Rubbermaid. He’s the man of wisdom.

@@keithb4077it depends on your size. I’m 6 1 and 230, a 100 gallon works perfectly fine. 150 gallon is if you’re really wanting room. I think 100 gallon is easier to get to the temp I want.

Buy a horizontal broken fridge. Heck if someone has it and the compressor is not reparable he probably give it to you for free just to get it out of the way. And their bucket is water proof and they have usually some form of drainage. If you find one with sliding doors like the ones that are in convenient stores even better. Best solution is to by a functioning horizontal fridge and make it easy for yourself. Buy a cheap one, few 00s of $s, big enough to sit in it, nothing fancy. You ll need one either way to freeze so much water every day. Even better find a closing 7/11 and buy a professional one but for the same price. They are heavy duty ones, and big, and they will last you for a while.

You can buy two and drill fill holes in the outside trough to put spray foam into and make it more insulated. That’s what I did. Totally worth it especially if you have more than one person using it at a time.

Funny I bought the same two tubs. The first smaller tub was only $39 and I used straps to secure it so it wouldn’t bust (now use it for storage). The second one was $99 (same as yours) at Tractor Supply and it works great. Very sturdy and I am fully immersed. I do it with a friend for safety. We go for 11 minutes but will shoot for 15. I agree that while it is cold, you start to relax. Make sure you move around.

This is a great alternative the only thing with a cold plunge is that it circulates the water inside so it allows you to get the most benefits. If you get in an ice bath and don't move eventually you will warm up the water around you until you fidget or move around

Try big blocks of ice too!!! Both work really well but not everyone has space in their freezer for a 3-5L block of ice lol! Glad you enjoyed! In the fall and winter you could buy a submersible water heater and make this a hot tub. You could also make a foam cover for it to help keep it cool or hot longer.

I used water bottle a few years ago but even with 2 cases it doesn’t get nearly cold enough. I also bought a freezer just for the bottles because 2 cases is a lot of freezer space, but they take more than a day to freeze solid once thawed out. It works ok if you do it occasionally and don’t want it really cold (depending on time of year and location anyway) I ended up buying an ice machine at Home Depot for a couple hundred dollars. Makes enough ice to get it to the low 40’s even in Texas summer.

I got one from Home Depot called Vevor or something like that for around $300. It says it makes 120 lbs in 24 hours but if you empty it as soon as it fills all day you might get 70-80lbs. It does a way better job than the bottles did because the ice melts all the way pretty fast where the bottles took a really long time to melt and often didn’t. Anyway, that’s my 2¢. I get mid 30’s to low 40’s every morning in the Texas heat.

If your planning on doing it in the winter I recommend keeping the setup near your garage door so it stays cold but not freezing to the point where the water is at a dangerous temperature!! I’ve always been interested in ice baths but I couldn’t ever do it consistently because I had to buy 6 packs of ice, using water bottles is an amazing idea! I’ll try this method out tomorrow and let you know how it goes 👍

If you guys have the budget I would strongly recommend buying a solid ice maker and some little bags to store the ice, gets my water to 8 degrees Celsius and I spend about $219CAD on it

Does this work if you just use the water bottles in the packaging? Also just FYI, staying still causes a sort of shield of warm water around your body. Its actually more intense to move around a bit because you prevent that shield from forming. Try it out and thank me (or hate me) later.

How long can you use the water in the tub before you need to change it out. Seems like it may start to grow mold or algae if you don't change it out. Maybe you can add some epsom salt to make the water last longer.

So I went ahead & tried this out. For the money it’s a pretty good set up. I’m 5’10” & pretty much could fit my whole body in there but if I wanted to submerge my head too I wouldn’t have been able to do it but overall I’m satisfied with it.

Very cool Nick ( forgive the pun). If you have real winters you can let the cold weather do the chilling process for you.I'm 66 and have been chillin' for a couple months. Makes me feel awesome.

First thing you gotta do is dunk your head soon as you get in and not wait till the very end. That will eliminate the headaches and will also send message to your brain and body to start the warming process.

If you want it a tad bit colder make sure to maintain a little movement in your limbs so the thermal layer doesn’t build.

It was a 110 deg in Texas. On a Sunday morning. I just got tired of the heat and went down to TSC to get my tank. for only 97 dollars. out the door. With in min i was relaxing in a nice cool tanks. Made my summer much much more enjoyable 👍👍 Plus i only put 30 gallons of water in it to be the perfect height. I like it so much ! That i painted the inside of the tank > SEASIDE BLUE. this color > 💦💦 The out side and bottom. I gave it 3 heavy coats of Amour All 👀 Boy it drank it up > If you don't have one? Get them while there in supplies. You will love it

The stones just keep it from sinking down into the grass and ruining it (the tub when full is hundreds of pounds). And I change the water every 7-10 days, and only go in clean!!

what i did using the same tub is i bought some small plastic storage buckets and i just grab water from the plunge and throw em in the chest freezer. ends up being 30+ LBS of ice lol. keeps it nice and cold. i usually get it down to around 50

Would layering two of the first tub (70gal HDX) you tried that didn’t hold the have worked? I liked that 70 gal because it would be easier to drop the temperature lower and faster with less water and based on you sitting in it at Home Depot it looks to be a perfect size. Anyone else try this? Or is there a reason it’s not doable?

Be sure to drink a few sips of the water before using it over and over again. In my experience thawing and then refreezing water bottles tends to create leaks or explosions

Dang, nice idea.. regarding the water bottles.. What was the temp of your water at plunge time? I don't think one needs it to be 34 degrees especially if your just starting.. 50 would be cold in my estimation..:) I was looking into metal cattle troughs too.. ?? thx

Down in Texas it takes about $20 worth of ice bags to cool the water to 48-50 degrees. After about 100 ice baths that’s $2000!! I’ve decided to invest into a chest freezer.

I want to try it out, but honestly i might just keep the bottles cased together still and just put my legs around ot or something so i dont have to scoop thek all out lol. Also might try using some big ice molds as well, or freeze a few empty milk jugs and leave them in overnight since i want to do it early morning before the sun is out so even it the summer it would already start out fairly cold
