Sure, you could do that. The only thing is the seam allowances would be bulky, but you could cut the extra fabric from the interlining, leaving a short seam allowance. I'd probably still do the topstitching to make sure it stays in place.

Yes, we've used a steam iron with this mat and haven't had any problems with moisture getting through.

Would I be able to use Pellon 100% polyester heavyweight fusible fleece (973FW1) instead of bump interfacing?

I wouldn't recommend it. That material is meant to be fused to something once, and I don't know how it would fair under intense heat repetitively. We do sell the bump interfacing here though - www.onlinefabricstore.net/hanes-natural-english-bump-drapery-interlining-.htm

Yes, quilting it would work well!

If you quilt it, it would go against the purpose of the mat. You want it flat so you can iron flat. The quilting may leave imprints you want to avoid (that is why ordering those cheap ironing mats with the quilting is so frustrating.) You get the quilting imprint in your blocks.

Hi! I followed your tutorial to make an ironing mat. I was doing good until I got to the part of putting in the batting into the 6" opening. I felt like no matter what I did, I couldn't straighten the batting or uncurl from the edge. And if I fiddled anymore, it felt like I was going to rip the mat. Is there an easier alternative?

Sew all 3 together in stead of 2. Way easier that way

Yes, if you use the heat resistant fabric you can use steam.

No, but puddles of water will seep through a little bit. As long as you are being sure to check, you should be fine!

Laura McCabe Bump interlining. I looked it up and it's used for lining curtains. 🙂

It's bump interlining (www.onlinefabricstore.net/hanes-natural-english-bump-drapery-interlining-.htm). You could also use batting, especially cotton batting. The bump provides nice cushion while still being dense.
