In this video we cover how to get that 80s synthwave and pop style drum mixing. We cover the use of gated reverb, make use of classic sounds such as the Linn drum, Zennheiser, and Roland.
I'm using FL Studio, however any workstation will do. So if you use Ableton, Reason, Logic, Studio One, and so on there will be no issues following along.

This is a truly AWESOME tutorial!! Your sound is so authentic, in terms of achieving a retro ideal, and you do a great job of explaining how to coax that out of a modern DAW. (Totally my type of thing!) Just recently I've had a couple of folks ask if I could do an 80s/Retrowave drum tutorial on my channel, but I think I just need to point them here! Thanks a lot for this.

I work for a bit in an anolge studio. There is some tricks they used for layering back then. 1 white nose throw a gate being trigger by the snare is super common. (Eq after for a destructive sound. Slap back delays on whole kick and EQ most of the lows and hi out give you that mid vibe Trigger for drums existed even then and where used to trigger sythns to play drum sounds on top Or a sub on the kick or by using a gate trigger by the sound NYC compression set up a comp on a send and send all the drums to it. Set the comp to crash the sound completely Bit crush your reverb send will give you that super old reverb sound

I didn't even know i liked synthwave until Spotify said that was my favorite genre in my yearly playlist. I'm still pretty new at making music and something I've been struggling with lately is finding the right drum sounds. For hip hop and trap it's easy but for everything else I cant get my drums to sound right. This video was very helpful and I am happy with my drums so far after following along with this video. Thank you!

i like how thorough you cover the subject of producers drums sounding the same, im glad you actually explain that and make note of it because indeed there are always different teqniques. imo the drums are the glue of the mix, and if they sound generic well... thats how the final project will sound

Nice to hear you feel similar. Drums can really define the character of a song. But to many people, especially in 80s stuff its literally an afterthought. They are more than a metronome lol

@@ElianaDAngelo I agree with this perception. Often Music Tutorials are either too mecanized without any sense of Historical and Aesthetic Frameworks, and the other extreme is when they are way too technical and theoretical and often dont illustrate the idea musically. This is great because one gets a pretty balanaced picture of both.
