I've found keeping the index finger straight on some barre chords really helps.

I spent about 4-6 months working on barre chords before I got it. Practiced Mr Jones by the Counting Crows daily for months until I got it, The only thing that worked for me was repetition. I watched many of the same videos you did, I knew the techniques, but my barre chords just sucked. What I found worked was just practicing the chord progressions (Am, F, Dm, G) and (C, F, G) over and over using a metronome, with the metronome set on 60, and doing a chord every 4 clicks. Took that much time just to get the F barre chord under the fingers. Then keep upping the metronome until I got to 120 bpm, one chord every 4 clicks. Then back the metronome down to 60, ad change chords every 2 clicks, all the way to 120. Then back down to 60 and change every click, and keep upping the tempo. As high as you can manage, so that you can get One chord change per click without errors. One tip I can offer is to not get too hung up on muted strings as long as you are using proper technique. I.e. your fingers land on the right frets. Over time, you realize proper technique is not using a lot of force, but there’s no way to get there without struggling through it. Just keep practicing, focus on proper technique with a metronome, and it will come in time.

I was exactly the same. I started Justin's intermediate course in January, started with the E-shaped barre chords and did those until June 1 when I moved on to the A-shaped chords. Now they aren't hard to switch to to, I just have to stop being lazy when I'm practicing otherwise they just sound meh.

You did mash all of the barre chord videos into 1, and I could see where each tip came from. The one I really need to work on is the fulcrum & pulling back on the barre instead of always trying to squeeze. I have found that switching from E-shaped to A-shaped in Justin' intermediate 1 minute changes, tires my hand & wrist out really fast. Same with playing Twist & Shout. Good stuff! Tomorrow will be 11 months for me, can't believe I've stuck with it, but I think I'm addicted, that's why. The first 3 months will test your patience, then the next 8 months will...Well test your patience. At 11 months, I now know when you start learning something new & you are dreading it because it is difficult & you suck, just give it 2 weeks.

Yes, using your body to lever the guitar is the most effective one I found when using an acoustic guitar. With the electric, I don't feel the need to do it because it is a little easier. Excellent work Rich! you are nearly at the year stage, I am so glad that you have stuck with it and you have not got an 'addiction' it is a 'passion', well that's what I say 😂. Yes, you are right, it is about sticking with it even when things aren't going as well as you hoped, that generally means you are learning and out of your comfort zone. That is the zone where you learn and grow in your understanding.

Ty for posting, I always learn something valuable from each of your videos. Do you have any helpful hints for changing to barre chords? Whether it’s changing from an open chord or another barre chord I never seem to make the change in time. TY!

Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad I can help in some way. The best way I have found for changing barre chords is not too dissimilar to Jerome's comment on this video, have a look and see what you think.

Great tip to start play your first barre chord at g position rather than f or as far away from nut as you can. The tension on the strings at the nut is almost impossible for beginners to overcome and will put them off guitar for life.

I’m at 6 months. I had one of those wow moments this week with Blackbird and Love Me Tender (all learned from Justin and my Beatles acoustic book). I used to suck so bad at both and how can play them pretty well. Sometimes you have to take a break, work on technique and other things, and then come back to it. What once was hard won’t be anymore

Great point and I agree, learning guitar doesn't always follow a linear path. The important part is to keep on working at different aspects of it, some feel quicker to learn than others but revisiting weak areas will only help us in the end.

as a beginner guitarrplayer you will get to the point where the barre chords will come in to play . The more advanced player will probably use more triad chords , it's a way to not have tp play barre chords all the time wich can strain you're hand and wrist . Players like jimi hendrix , john frusciante and john mayer use them all the time , they also use there pinky to do some embellishments while playing these triads chords wich just makes it all just more nice sounding .

The fulcrum thing never works for me but what really helped me was making sure I had my fingers basically on the line of the fret

Interesting, what works for one doesn't always work for another. All I know is that barre chords take a long time to master!

Midlife Guitar I still struggle when I switch to minor. Not with the hand position but with getting everything to ring out. The B string sometimes just doesn’t ring out, which sucks when you’re trying to play something like “Don’t Look Back In Anger” and the movement from F to Fminor to C is crucial
