I removed 3 air layers on this shimpaku juniper with two of the air layers only done about 2.5 months ago. Very fast results on this tree. Now I will leave alone for 6 months so the roots can grow strongly.

I’ve never air layered a shimpaku but I’m gonna try several because I bought a couple itiogawa’s that were just grown out so I twisted some branches on a few and I will try to air layer them off. Your videos have made me feel semi comfortable lol

Cool vid dude. I picked up an Itoigawa Shimpaku seedling about two years ago. I'm just leaving it to grow in a big pot for now. Hope to get it looking like a great tree one day. Love the twist and turns you get out of your Shimpaku's :)

Would you say hinoki cypress would work similar or there is no chance? Any special recommendation, if you ever done hinoki air layer?
@Bonsaiworx
@Bonsaiworx 2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tried Hinoki. If you have a vigorous growing branch then I would start with that one. May have to leave on longer than 3 months. It will be a good trial.

Can you make a video on how to air layer them and when’s the best time to airlayer please Wanted to ask if its better to do it while it’s pushing new growth?

Hi Angel, I’ve done so many videos on air layering shimpaku. You will need to go through my playlists and the videos on my KZfaq. There are so many including how to do it, timings and the results achieved. Hope that helps. Thanks

@@Bonsaiworx also I’m working with a juniper nana, I’ve tried air layering once but it dried up. Im currently trying again with two this time but the tips are already feeling weak so I don’t think they are gonna succeed. Don’t know if it’s because there is too much foliage or because of the sun
@Bonsaiworx

You need to air layer strong growth areas. Strong shoots and branches work best. Weak branches don’t succeed.

@@Bonsaiworx Naturally I work on strong one, just that they tend to weaken rather quickly… then again I guess that means they weren’t strong to begin with😅 Thank you btw

Callum Mcdonogh I usually leave them only for 6-12 months before looking to work on them but will definitely show updates when I do.

Hi David. I’ve been watching your videos for a while from the U.K. and earlier this year was inspired to have a go at setting a couple of air layers on my itoigawa juniper. This week I checked and I’ve got loads of roots on all three! I’m well chuffed. I’ve separated them now and potted them up into their own individual pots and they’re looking like nice little trees. Thank you for your inspiration - I doubt I’d have tried this without watching and learning from your videos. A question for you: how long do you leave them before you start wiring them and think about doing some root work? Should they just be left to grow for 12 months? Or do you start this work in the spring following separation? Thanks again, Andy

Andy Johnson that’s awesome!!! Great to hear you tried it and had success. It’s a great process to create more trees for free!! I usually leave the layer alone for 6 months to a year before doing work on it. A year is safer and usually depends on how well the roots have grown and filled the pot. Congratulations on your success!

nice air layer, how long take to get that roots?, and I recommended to cut 50% green, is to much food to delivery for the little roots
@Bonsaiworx

Jorge Gutierrez on the smaller two air layers took less than 3 months. On the large one I had it on for maybe 9 months.

Love It Mate !! how exciting to nail 3x air layerings from one plant .....am a bit jealous LOL. Other Air Layer 'masters' state that one should keep the plant in shallow water tray so 'wicking' can occur up into the air layered root ball?? Any thoughts on that?

I just keep it simple. Just make sure you keep watering your bonsai and stock as you would do normally.

David it's time to let the Mother plant retire and allowed to full fill "HER" potential as a Bonsai, you have to admit she has done her bit for the Shimpaku community. I implore you to let her grow old gracefully 🌲 and video that journey🙏🙏🙏🇬🇧

@@Bonsaiworx "NO" David it is her time to shine in the Australian sun, you know you wont sleep easy if you air layer again, as you can see I already have 2 thumbs agreeing with me, don't do a British Parliament by going against the will of the people.

Vinh Nguyen it’s a great place to go to but expensive, however you do get what you paid for. It’s hit and miss what you might find. Not really much in shimpaku junipers but they have heaps of other conifers. I would visit there only if you are going up there for another reason or a day trip to just enjoy the area.
