In this video we make a classic DJ Premier type beat by recreating his boom bap classic "Boom" on the MPC Live 2. I break down multiple Primo techniques and settings for the MPC One, Live, X, and MPC Beats that you can use to make better boom bap type beats

*DJ PREMIER:* “When Royce was telling me the subject matter, he said he wanted it to be like a bomb as far as his wordplay, his rhymes, and who he is represents a big explosion,” Premier said. “He told me to put a ‘tick’ in it. At the time there was no Serato, so you literally had to find sound effects. I kept a lot of sound effect records, and I took it directly off one of those.”

"drum selection is something you really can't skimp on and it's something you can't really teach" is the realest shit. when i listen to my old beats from 2011 i be a lil salty cuz i had some real decent chops but half the time i was using stock drums bc i ain't know any better. or random, very raw breakbeats without knowing how to mix them.

That. Was. DOPE! Preemo is one of my favorites. I'm new to music production, and this already helped me with a beat I started last night (not a boom bap). I have been trying to recreate beats I like to learn (they are mostly trash lol) so that works for me . I'm using software only at this point (MPC 2.9) but I can definitely use these techniques. Excellent video man - thanks!!

Premier's drum kits are iconic. Back in the day, when you heard a new cut on the radio, you could instantly recognize his hard hitting kicks and snares with his signature swing timing. And almost all the big names in the 90s worked with him at one point. Moment of Truth was my favorite album when i was a teenager, and I still own the clean edited version on CD so I can listen to the songs just like I remember hearing them on the radio. Check Premo's channel if you haven't yet, he breaks down the history behind his classic beats, he still has everything saved on floppy disks and he is saluting the floppy, plus the Akai samplers and drum machines. So 🔥🔥🔥 keep working at what you love, sista!

I really enjoyed this video. I used to DJ Hip-hop 10-20 years ago. I always used to play Royce Da 59 Boom, everyone always loved it and as studenty British white kids, DJ Premier was God. Anything Premo, or Gangstarr went down a storm. I always presumed the 6 beat was a solid sample. Never heard the original before and never realised it was a chopped rearranged. Great video. Thanks. Who the fuck down thumbed this? This was a well done video, didn't deserve thumbs down at all.
