Turn your rough stones into jewelry grade gemstones by following this cab making video. How to make cabochons! Cabochons or cabs for short are the dome gemstones you often see in Opals. These are not the facetted gemstones like you would see in diamonds. This DIY tutorial takes you through the steps of creating cabochons from lapidary rough stones. In this demonstration I use my BC Ocean Picture Stone to make 3 cabs from start to finished product.

Cabochons are my favorite way of seeing gemstones. It feels more natural to me- like river rocks. I enjoy the rock music too :)

On that specific piece you were working on. I am a retired wood worker. I named my pieces, tables & such. That piece, I would work it to a tear shape, call it the Dragon's tear. Due to the redish color. Loved the download.

I highly recommend you use dopsticks on the backs of your cabs when you work them. You can get more evenly domed cabs by rolling your cabs on your wheels, and you'll still have all your fingertips intact by the time you finish cabbing!

My thoughts, you cut the most beautiful parts out d/t the "hole". Very nice "waves" that were to the left. You might want to consider working with epoxies to fill inclusion holes so you can use the best parts of the stone.

Back in the seventies, I had a Sears Roebuck catalog, Lapidary tub mill. Golly, you could get almost anything from Sears back then. I did a bit of slabbing and cabochon cuts. I lived in sedimentary zones though, and didn't have much money for material. I still live in sedimentary rocks, no longer have the equipment, but I have the urge to play. Thanks for the dream.

I've been dying to try some cabs, but the equipment is so expensive. I had NO idea there were such clubs! I bet Capilano Rock and Gem knows if theres one in our city. I love watching the BlackOpalDirect channel. He's a master grinder and polisher, and I've learned so much from him.

You can get started with hand cabbing with sand paper and go from there

Thought you were never going to mention dop sticks. They are invaluable for getting control of your grinding. I like to use them right from the start. Free hand cabochons are so fun to do, bit of an art form looking for the best image in each stone. polish up to 30,000 grit, yet cerium oxide on a leather wheel still makes them pop!!! Nice shop, well appointed!! Nice cabs!! My first cab. was from a piece of brown agate, the banding made a picture that looked just like Vancouver Island, later I went to a silver smithing class, and made a bezel setting for it. Rock On!!!!

That was very interesting! Glad to see there was a way to keep your fingers away from a spinning sanding wheel...but the metal pan bottom - if the stone slips that might be a costly(time) mistake.

I have been working with this stone for about 25 years and have cut hundreds of cabs. Mine came from the original working of the site. It had been called ocean picture rock. The stone, or at least the cabs cut from it, are a combination of serpentine, calcite and veins of quartz. The blue is the calcite and it is somewhat soft. I have had really bad luck tumbling it because of the different hardnesses.

Yes dopsticks are the go for sure, also put a small bevel on the bottom of the cab so it sits in your setting better, love watching your videos magical country.

I can see that every different thing you do, requires a different skill, different equipment, and you couldn't possibly do it all in one day. I would love to dig for the ocean stone, and then be able to cut a piece and polish it and take it home with me. This would be great for for tourists. If the person who owned the cutting and polishing equipment has a pile of rough ocean stone, And a tourist could pick out a stone to buy , cut and polish to take home. They could also shop for professionally cut stones at the same time. And of course someone would need to be there to give a demonstration.

haven't cut slabs since the late seventies. have a slab cutter in my basement. was mostly interested in faceting stones at that time. I'm retired now, so a lot of time to do things again .I still have my faceting machine.

As far as I can tell, bog-standard Cerium Oxide polishing paste is 2.5um particle size, which works out at roughly 10,000 grit.
