Florida laws say we can't use steel traps on public lands, but we can use all the snares we like. You can use steel traps with a free permit on private property. The sticker is they usually don't let you use more than 6. Most trappers use body grips and since they don't have enough traps to gang bang the beaver the first night, they become trap shy very quickly, and the trappers leave a lot of Beaver behind. This is why I don't use Conibars, I use a half dozen footholds and mostly snares. I can put in 25 to 30 water sets with snares, then do my bank set with what daylight I have left. Snares work very good for me and I find new ways to set them all the time. Sometimes it's in deep water cypress swamps, sometimes in lakes with hard banks or lakes with Lily weedlines 20 ft from the bank, so I put them on the outside of the weedline. Other lakes only gave marshy banks like you usually work. What ever the case the snares are my go to tools, and with the different sets I use I can slam them hard the first few days and clean them out in a week. I did a lot of research on their family unit, and their awesome ability to manage water in dry areas, so I primarily go for nuisance beaver and leave public lands alone. Only get $16.00 a hide in Florida anyway, so I am a meat trapper...good eating.

Just came across this video as this is my first season trapping. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out a castor mound(I was definitely overthinking it). Your video helped me tremendously

Very good demonstration that’s basically how I put in castor mound but I usually have a drowning rod with a bridger #5 but I did catch my first beaver in a 330 2 days ago using castor I made it was a 49 pound female

Great video man, I’m the 102nt trapper in California! I can’t find anyone who will show me the basics to trap here so thanks for making the videos even with the low fur prices and the anti’s...It feels good to know I’m not the only trapper!

I went to a lake that had tons of Beaver with caster mound all over the place, and they were much bigger than the ones I make. About 10 inches at the base and at least 8 inches high, with 2 inch layers of weeds then mud, then weeds again and so on to the top. I never made them that high, these guys must have been very meticulous about how their mounds should look. Been making mine a little bigger since.

So many different approaches to castor sets. I like to keep traps back from the castor mound, anywhere from 5 to 50 from the castor, conibear, snare or cage so that when the beaver is focussing on the castor the trap is pretty much out of the picture, no association between castor and trap. As long as there is a tight spot somewhere between where the beaver is coming from to get to the castor you will catch him. Also, beaver as often as not go around everything and are caught leaving the castor mound. It's about 50/50 coming and going.

Nice sets our seasons don't usually add up to open water trapping up here. But with global warming might be able to try one of those sets some day. Of course if beaver prices were to Sky rocket going south to trap beaver would be a nice spring option.

Hello, I found some what I believe are very definite slides. I saw cutting and all that are fresh (by the way) I'm just a beginning trapper. These slides are beaten to mud, no grass in this crick. What are the chances that there is just one beaver there? I could not find a definite lodge but I did find what I thought was the start of one and also a feed pile with 20 or so golf ball diameter saplings. Would you know?

Love your channel! You use a lot of wire in your set and on your traps. What gauge wire do you use for each purpose?
@330Maniac
@330Maniac 3 жыл бұрын
I do. I will be switching to cable though as wire just isn't always reliable. I use whatever they have at the hardware store actually lol. It's thick stuff though
@valsahr5836
@valsahr5836 3 жыл бұрын
Cool. I was looking at setting my 330’s up with cable. I have had several people recommended 1/8 cable. I currently use 11 gauge wire. It’s stout but I worry about it. I don’t trap near as much as you do, but 330’s get expensive.

Adam Wiech I've tried 220s in the past and honestly would never use them for beaver again. Sure you get Beaver but getting a 55+ lbs Beaver in them has to be a perfect shot also if they are bigger than 55 it's even worse. You end up educating more Beaver than you catch.

Ohio trapper Stake them down with a T bar. Or drive a stick into the mud and make sure and wire the snare well below the mud line so they can't cut it off

I would suggest you educate yourself on how trapping and hunting laws come into being, biologist are involved every step of the way, they write the best management and practices that most of the country uses to ensure stable populations remain. That's why the limits can go up or down depending on how the conservation plan is working in reality.
