To all the individuals who keep complaining about why she showed mixing all the flour stages. Not EVERYONE in the world knows what the dough is supposed to look like at certain stages. Some individuals (most of the time children learning to cook for the first time) like step by step stages so they cam see that YES their soft dough is looking the right way at certain stages. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Skip ahead. But don't complain over the little things just so that you can be a negative Nancy.

I dont know how anyone could complain about the video. I am glad you made this point. Anyone trying this recipe for the first time must be patient, half the fun of making bread is learning the process. If the first try didn't come just right then adjust the dough the next time you make it. If in the baking your loaves came a bit dark then cut back a bit on the time in oven. This also makes a great loadf bread.

I made this for our Shabbat service and it was a hit! Not one crumb was left. Rabbi was so grateful to take a whole loaf home. Folks enjoyed this more than the challah from two local bakeries. That says a lot. The only thing I changed was using olive oil and as tradition prayer.

Excellent question, Matt Merrill. Salt won't kill yeast entirely; it depends how much is used, and the amount needs to be balanced with the rest of the ingredients. You may stir in the salt as the last part of Step 1, once the dough starts to rise. Here's a link to the original recipe so you may review details: allrecipes.com/recipe/6760/challah-i/. Enjoy the recipe!

Shalom. When I make challah for each Shabbat, I use four to six ropes to braid. I also find it way easier to use my marble rolling pin to flatten the dough into a rectangle, divide it into how many strands I want and then braid afterward. It's much easier than wasting a lot of time trying to roll perfect ropes. =/

For anyone who is wondering-things like honey and molasses don't need to be added if you don't want to!!!! For Shabbat my mother would sometimes add honey and sometimes she wouldn't. And if you're vegan or vegetarian there's plenty of recipes!
@MarySanchez-qk3hp
@MarySanchez-qk3hp 5 жыл бұрын
Honey is vegetarian, though definitely not vegan. :). I use a local source, unfiltered and unpasteurized. It tastes like caramel. And I appreciate all the work the bees put into it, and how threatened they are now. Beekeepers care more than anyone else about colony collapse syndrome. And without bees, there won't be any bee-pollinated fruits, grains, veggies, not even meat if you eat meat because their animal food will also be gone. No meat, no dairy. Maybe not even some herbal medicines. The bees, beekeepers, wheat farmers, flour factory workers, my chicken, the people who grew my yeast... all that work for a loaf of bread.

I do apologize if the question sounds weird. But when I made this bread, it came out wonderfully! I carefully had to check how much flour I was using since I was trying to make a bigger size bread (it's a family of five with 2 extra hungry ones lol). Could I use the same recipe but with whole wheat flour? My mother is diabetic and would wonder if I can switch between the usual flour to whole wheat. Also does leaving the flour during its poofing stage longer make it more fluffier?
@allrecipes
@allrecipes 7 жыл бұрын
Not weird at all, Poshie Po. A very smart question to ask. You may substitute whole wheat flour for all-purpose flour, but use 3/4 cup of whole wheat for each cup of all-purpose. That's because whole wheat flour is denser and heavier, so you don't need as much. Another option -- because Challah is traditionally a delicate bread -- would be to substitute half whole wheat flour with half all-purpose. When proofing the dough, there are many factors contributing to the rising. Temperature is the strongest influence, more than time. Around 80 degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature. The dough should appear doubled in size from its original amount. This can take from 1 hour to 1-1/2 hours. You don't want to let it rise too long because the alcohols produced by the yeast will give it a strong yeasty taste and smell. Happy bread baking!

@MarySanchez-qk3hp
@MarySanchez-qk3hp 5 жыл бұрын
Whole wheat might need some extra liquid, it absorbs more, but yes you can use WW flour. The only flour I'd warn you about is rye flour, which has so little gluten that you really do need to make part of it wheat flour or you'll end up baking a brick. I'd suggest you call King Arthur Flour, their helpline number is on their website. They're very experienced bakers and can answer all your questions. And they're very friendly! I use King Arthur almost exclusively. It has higher gluten content, most real chefs and the cooks on PBS prefer it too, it's an employee-owned cooperative in New England, and they age their flour properly. Especially for making bread, it just turns out better for me. Even Walmart sells it.
@MarySanchez-qk3hp
@MarySanchez-qk3hp 5 жыл бұрын
... and Allrecipes, there is also WHITE whole wheat, which doesn't taste as earthy but just as nutritious. It's easier sometimes to get kids to eat that instead of traditional WW flour.

Give it a go anyway. Try substiting bread flour with self rising flour, and follow the recipe as usual. The purists will argue against this, but I've made it with SR Flour many times with pleasing results. Better to make it with SR Flour than not baking it at all. 👍
