Hey Jim, thank you so much for the kind words I am so glad was able to provide you with some useful information. It sounds like you are off to a great start. Reading your message made me honestly so happy and I could really tell you watched a few of my videos took all the best information and made yourself one nice setup. The easiest way I have found to wash the coco coir (should make video but not very professional) I fill the coco coir into an old pillow case and run it under some hot water for a while. Making sure to really give it a good rinse and try to run on all sides. It will get pretty heavy so don't do to much at once. Kind of like a coffee filter. Please keep me updated on your edible garden would love to know how it goes. P.S. Good luck with the spinach germination! (and of course everything else)

Planted seeds on Tuesday, 5/23 @ 6PM. Saw nothing Wed or Thu... but by 6PM on Friday I had these sprouts - Arugula, Romaine and Lola Rossa. 6PM Saturday added Mixed Gourmet. Nothing last night... but this morning (Mon & halfway through Day 6) the Spinach had sprouted. But something was bothering me. My understanding was that these water only jars were to be kept in the dark for 7 days. Those Day 3 sprouts, however, were beginning to get somewhat "leggy"... and that just didn't seem right. So back to the videos to see if I could find the one within which you discussed "Starting Seeds" (actually, this video) and I began to listen carefully as I played it again. And there it was! "When it has sprouted, move it into the light... as otherwise, it will get leggy." So... the 5 that have sprouted are now under my LED light (ACKE 600T Full Spectrum). Next, I'll have to figure out how high above the plants it should be and how long to leave it on during the day. I have one gripe so far. I used an indoor Valspar black metallic spray paint for my jars. I did two coats and left a 1/2" strip as a window to view water levels. They looked absolutely awesome. Unfortunately, it doesn't take much at all to chip away some of the paint. I'm going to have to find something better for paint that won't chip if I look at the jar the wrong way. Other than that, I'm having the time of my life with this new hobby. Thanks for all of your help!!

Hey Jim sorry for the delay was out of town for few days. This is such an exciting feeling and time when they come up and finally begins to grow. I am very excited to hear how fast your seeds are germinating and I have had many leggy seeds over my course of growing and learning happy was able to provide a solution in one of my videos for this problem. That is a nice light system just checked it out. The best way to figure out how high is to get a PAR meter was doing some research to find best option and narrowing down my list. A great tool to have for hydroponic growers will be able to give you accurate readings and you can adjust until you have optimal results. Yea I have been having the same issue they look absolutely amazing and really sleek but any scratch bang or water touches it its over. I am so happy and excited for you keep up the great work and I love your updated messages. Thanks for taking time and discussing your progress cant wait for more!!

Time for an update. First, I'm having the best of times with this. Thanks for pointing me in the right starting direction. I've begun a restart of the lettuces and the Arugula. First... I painted some new jars. I washed them, then wiped each jar with isopropyl alcohol and painted them with black satin Krylon Colormaster (after reading comments from someone who paints jars regularly for use with gifts). For the moment, this seems to have done the trick. If not, I might try Nezar Rihani's idea of applying tape... or dip the jars in a rubberized coating... or use your construction paper sleeves. So much fun! To clean my coco coir, I gave thought to your pillow case method and decided to try something similar. I ordered a 12" x 12" fine nylon mesh bag (used for making almond milk). Whether spraying hot water into the top opening... or closing its drawstring and soaking it in a sink full of hot water... it was extremely easy to use. So this round of seeds gets started with some well rinsed coco coir. Tonight, upon finishing with the jar prep and the seed plantings (including the "seed starter" spray), I put tops on each of the 5 jars. My thought is that this should hold the humidity up for the 48 hours I plan on keeping it in place. I'll then remove the tops and put it into or near the grow light. So much fun experimenting. I also had some jars that were ready for their first nutritional feast. When I measured out 2 grams, it didn't look like as much as your 2 grams did from the video (and we're using the same things). So I wondered if my scale might be wrong. Did you know that a US penny weighs exactly 2.5 grams? Using first one and then two pennies, I was able to verify my scale. Nice, huh? Anyway... thanks again for the time you continue to take to share what you've learned!

Yea its so nice feels like you are outdoors comfortably at home. Minus all the pests is MAJOR plus for me. When I used to use soil indoors would constantly have pest issues and those tiny black flies are just such a pain. Really happy figured out a nice way to still incorporate clay pebbles and still able to use coco coir (I really like it) I would be happy to post a video tomorrow. Will add in good information when to use what ratios. There is not a lot of information about this everyone seems to neglect this very important detail. Keep a look out tomorrow afternoon will post video. Once I place the seeds into the kratky jar system I don't add any addition heat non necessary. You can place anywhere on the side and for peppers will come up in about a week usually 7-10 days max will germinate. The coco coir will stay be in the perfect conditions for seeds to germinate. I am very happy to hear you are looking into other alternatives. You have amazing results using the Aerogarden systems but very limited the amount you can grow and height limits not to great either. But regardless an amazing product I think for smaller grows. The glass jar option is great if you pick the right size you don't need to worry about refilling. I have found any sort of covering, increases the odds of germination because it helps contain the heat, sure, but most importantly, the moisture. Because the worst thing to happen during germination is the medium going dry. So although coverings are far from necessary, they can help if you live in a cold or dry climate, or if simply one is forgetful, like myself, when it comes to watering days ;)

You don't have to paint the jar, but you do need to cover them with black paper to block out light to keep mold from growing.

Gazza K double cup method is an excellent way to grow but I find this is just so much simpler and no need to transplant at all.

Dont plant to grow until the roots are established, this is the same for hydroponics as it is for soil. In other words you shouldn't be putting them in here until your root system is strong enough, and by then you won't have any trouble with the roots reaching the water.

I can't say for sure but I remember seeing a reply he posted that he hadn't found a plant yet that didn't like the masterblend mixture. So it seems like he'd use it for most of not all plants

Hey James thanks you very much! The way that I always do it first starting with plain water allowing the water to touch the bottom of the net cup. This will allow the plant to wick up the water as needed and keep the root system nice and happy. After about a week the roots will grow out the bottom of the net cup and will be in the water. At this point the plant has put on it's first set of true leaves and is ready for some hydroponic nutrients. It does require swapping out the water in the jar. There are 3 changes that are done but you could do 2 if you really wanted to but may not always work out. First is what I described above and I add half strength of vegetative stage mixture. (1 gram Masterblend, ! gram Calcium Nitrate, 0.5 grams Epsom Salt) I let the plant grow for about 1-2 weeks depending on the plant. (Small plants 1 week, Large plants 2 weeks) Now plant is ready for vegetative stage mixture (2 grams Masterblend, 2 grams Calcium Nitrate, 1 gram Epsom Salt) for leafy greens this is where you can stop and no need to add anything else. For flowering plants that produce fruits and vegetables will require flowering stage mixture (3 grams Masterblend, 3 grams Calcium Nirate, 2 grams Epsom Salt) A little more detail about difference between mixtures. You want to swap out the jar between the different stages to allow the plant to grow and develop. If you provided full strength right away it may burn up the plants root system and possible kill your plants. Vegetative stage mix is for plants that are putting on new branches and leaves and will give you a PPM of around 500-700. Flowering stage mix is for plants that are putting on new flowers, fruits and vegetables and will give you a PPM of around 1100-1300. Hope this helps a little bit and thank you for watching!

So basically when plants are germinating they have everything they need in the seed to get started. When you add fertilizer to early it can burn the young roots and kill your plant before it gets started. You have to wait for the first sets of true leaves to form and which point you can change out the nutrients and water in container of your choice. I normally do two changes when plants develop first sets of true leaves I add 1/2 strength mix of the nutrients. Wait about 1-2 weeks until roots developed a big more and then I change out reservoir again and add regular strength mix of the nutrients. You can add full right away after the first sets of true leaves develop will also work. I have tried both but prefer this way because plants require different levels of nutrients as they mature same like humans requirements change. A gift would be so nice and wonderful to spread the joy of planting. I share when I can with friends and sometimes strangers who strike a gardening conversation. Can't help myself I grow way more then I can contain so works out for everyone!

IDK how he does things, but personally I've never had a need to worry about darkness during germination, I just pop them out of their seeds in full light from start to finish.

Some Coco has lots of sodium chloride in it and needs to be rinsed very thoroughly or it will mess with both your plants and your nutrient measurements.

I prefer using coco coir over rockwool because it gives me a feeling of playing with the dirt and a sense of being outdoors a tiny bit more. Clay pebbles you would still need for both options so that is a must have. I really like price value and quantity difference is not comparable. For the price of coco coir you can have 100s if not 1000s of plants cant say the same for rockwool.

Soothing Garden you mention liking coco coir and that's what you use in the video, but the link is to rockwool. Is there a reason?

My pleasure. I got it from my local organic gardeners club. Now defunct, unfortunately. BTW I don't spray the plants with it. I use it instead of plain water for the first few days.

This is the system for me. Thanks. Why do I need $9.99 type hydrogen peroxide. If the 3% at Walmart at $1 is good enough for wounds, why pay the hype about the higher price. What is the real research on this issue?

It should work, I don't see why it would not work. I personally have never tried it before. But I feel confident will work well! Like most other plants I have yet had a plant that did not like the nutrients mixture

Hey Vinnie, Yes you can certainly use soil as an alternative to coco coir. Should work just fine, but keep in mind soil has more pests and bugs normally and you may have to do a little bit of maintenance or treatments, like spraying for aphids or mites. Also if your soil is wet for a long time, may have some annoying little flies arise. If that happens you can simply cover the top of the soil with some wood chips, or rocks will even work. Cinnamon is also a great option! Message me anytime you want any advice happy to help best I can.

Hi Lucy, actually I would recommend to avoid using black. It gets too hot in the sun. Heats up the water too much and it will create perfect environment for bacteria too grow. The goal is just to cover the jars to prevent algae from growing. Cardboard box should do good think. Trail and error best experience and teacher! Water heater, fridge top, sunlight, computer case, anywhere that there's ambient warmth that the seeds can experience.

Of course you can replace the coco coir. The growing media won't make much of a difference, as long as its able to let roots grow throughout and find its way down to nutrients. Some other good options are clay pebbles, rockwool cubes, small gravel stones, vermiculite just to name a few. Worst case you can even use a piece of styrofoam even just anything to hold plant (cuttings in your case) in place.

Test the pH with meter is always best.

Yeah that would work. The media won't make a difference anymore after the roots begin to grow down into the container your using. I like to think of it as something that just holds the plant while it grows.

The coco coir should cover the seeds and create a dark environment so either placing right under lights or putting in a dark environment will work. I prefer keeping out of direct light just to not take up space in the greenhouse if not ready yet. The black bag will do a good job keeping light minimal. Just make sure to leave some space for air to get in. Weekly update coming soon!

Hey fede rockin, I refill when it runs dry. But don't wait to long or plant will begin to suffer when empty. You can also wait until almost completely dry then change out the nutrients. The reason you want to wait between changing reservoir, will allow the roots to continue to grow in search of water.
