Ngl, this is the kinda video that would benefit hugely from showing how you start with a small region of a few biomes and how you make each area interesting using this method.

I am currently running two sandbox campaigns set inspired on the sort of untamed American south in the late 19th century past the civil war. Im using a hex map to govern overland travel, and divided regions by biome, and faction control (biome using drawing of symbols for the biomes and faction control using sharpies for color coding often centred around a keyed hex with a type of home base)

Sounds like a good way of keeping track!

Great video. Giving tips to players new to open sandbox play gives them a greater chance to make this their main mode of gameplay. I truly believe the sandbox play style is the best way to play not just D&D, but all TTRPGs, outside of those specifically designed for storytelling. Even 5E groups would benefit greatly. Once the group gets acclimated to sandbox play a whole new world of possibilities will be unlocked to them. This is really one of the best newer advice channels for TTRPGs. 👍👍👍

This gives me a sandbox idea to have at least two major Dwarven factions (not counting Duergar equivalents), one that relies heavily on magical ores, the crafting of magical tools, and maybe developed or modified the worlds rune systems. Their counterpart would be a faction of Dwarves that either refused to work on magical ores and runes, or were away from them; instead of relying on magical systems, they would experiment with mindsne resources and systems, eventyually developing the first gears, clocks, mechanical lifts, and various forms of gunpowder tools and weapons (incliding firearms). These two factions both could seenthemsleves as "True Dwarves", and the hostilities may have even led them to full wars. The regions kf both would he sumilar in some ways, duebto a shared cuktural origin, but drastically different if it's based on a magitech or clockwork theme

Love this video. Great advice here! Gonna launch my first ever campaign soon, and I plan to set it in a world of my own making. I've been working on it for a couple of years, creating regional notes in about four different layers of time. I'm not even overwhelmed by it with smart notetaking and inspiration references. I'm very excited to run my first ever sandbox!

I'm running a sandbox with an over the top 80s fantasy movie theme where the players are in a jungle in the middle of a Vietnam style war between an army of elves and an army of vc Goblins.

5:38 or at least let's stop off at Ace Hardware to pick up six or seven fire extinguishers and a bucket of sand 😀.

For that boardgame of mine it simple. The traintracks got to run through the area and if there isnt a Point of Interest, you cant go there as Thaumcraft Taint is something you dont muck around with. Each Region slops into each other IE The mountains with death magic all over them lead to bloody plains.

Hey Randall I've been loving your videos, they have answered almost all questions I've been having about the game I'm preparing to run. All, but one: I am very stuck on how to start the first session. Is it still a good idea to start with an inciting incident like a tavern+combat type of start? do you do anything in particular that gives your players a chance to drive the plot from the very start?

If you have a rumor table you can roll on that and give each of them a rumor or hook. Just make sure they seem actionable or easy enough for them to find from the start. Too obscure or too far from your starting point isn’t going to be too helpful to start. Alternatively, you could just start them outside a small starter dungeon and have several hooks discoverable in there. That method does have a more linear start, but it does get their attention immediately and gets them in the action immediately which are both good things to kick start momentum. And as long as you give them the option to pivot, then it’s fine imo. You can of course combine the two options as well, which I have done in the past. Hopefully that helps!

Earthmote, I got a kinda dumb question to ask. Was there any Monster, Boss or big Encounter that the sandbox nature of your campaign made special? I havent made a campaign yet but I found out probably the best dumb way to kill certian bad guys. Put Holy purified water in a super soaker and soak the battlefield in it. 😂 Especially when you do that but with a thunderstorm you created like 2 hours ago and arrive to the "Bathing" 😂

Most memorable villains in sandboxes are probably the ones that stand on the opposition of your players goals. For old school games that usually means ones that are after the same treasure as the PCs. So even a relatively minor character (at first) could do that! They also don’t like NPCs that take things directly from them. Say they are attacked by a group of bandits with overwhelming numbers (20+) that take their magic items but leave them alive. The players just found their arch enemies.

@@Earthmote I think a real nice one would be a riff on Fallout Dead Money "Dean Domino" fight. Basically the arena is a death trap with near unkillable holographic guards and you got to go backstage to not die of poison and explosive radios. And the fun part is when he is hinting that he had ebough of you not being a doormat, your pc starts to come up with a plan to ambush him. That would be cool to see a Bad guy who thought ahead but .. is at the entrance of his keep, castle or what not and it too risky to try and take a secert route so he has to run and activate the traps. So if players got them rolls and foreknowledge they could try to trap him and end him in a ironic way.
