You need to let it set and let the bacteria, fungi and nemotodes multiply and grow. You want to aerate the water to favor growth conditions for aerobic bacteria over the anaerobic bacteria. The fungus and bacteria are why you want to use the compost because that is where you find them.

I keep a 5 gal bucket water/plant fiber brewing at all times. Bacteria double in number twice per hour at 70 degrees or so. Once you get the "brew" started and stinking, pour it one part to five (or more) of water. Use a pump-up garden sprayer to moisten top and beneath surfaces of leaves as well as stems and surrounding soil.
@MissMolly337728 күн бұрын
That is what I do. Water and get dandelion, plantain, and any type of dock, like burdock, broadleaf dock, curly dock leaves and roots, because these all have long roots that reach down and find all the good stuff deep in the soil. This is my first year of taking gardening seriously, but that just made sense to me, when I hear about compost tea. Not sure if it is helpful, but I am hoping it is. 🤷♀️
@emilybh62554 жыл бұрын
You probably know now (in 2020) that the aerated /oxygenated state of the tea goes away after 6-8 hour if you don't use a bubbler. So if you aren't going to use one, it is best to use the tea while it is still oxygenated - maybe after 4 hours of steeping.
@dianeprince16843 жыл бұрын
Emily BH, thank you!
@pinkorganichorse2 жыл бұрын
I would have no idea about that. So steeping 48 hours doesn't make it a richer, stronger fertilizer?
@robertsanders3392 жыл бұрын
If u leave it for awhile with out stirring it all u have to do is stir it for awhile and it will get oxygen back in the water Water and oxygen mix at the water lever

Hey a little yeast never hurts, if you don't bubble it I guess it would be like swamp water with all the weeds and dead stuff steeping in it, and look how lush the area around it grows
@ssijon2 жыл бұрын
yup! you are correct! I actually use 2 knee high panty hose. One with compost and one with wormcasting, then of course a aerator like a fish tank one from a store. All in a 5 gallon bucket hanging each one in the water.
@Tee_Dawg12 жыл бұрын
I use compost tea in a 30 gal garbage can. I started it with Black Kow and fish emulsion, topped off with water. From there, I've added all the yard waste and veggie scraps I get. I collect rain water so I don't get all the chlorine.
@kerryheafner89558 жыл бұрын
I use compost tea a lot! I do bubble air with an aquarium pump through it to 1) dissipate the chlorine in the water quicker, and 2) to provide beneficial microbes with oxygen. I also add a dollop of unsulphured molasses so beneficial microbes have a carbohydrate source. But, as you've demonstrated, these two steps are certainly not necessary.
@postupmedia2 жыл бұрын
this is the proper way
@bethb8276 Жыл бұрын
You can also dissipate chlorine by simply leaving it in a 5 gal bucket for 24 hours, stirring helps, but I've had very good luck not even stirring. Plants hate chlorine, but more importantly, it would not be good for the microbes in the compost, which is most important.
@colekter5940 Жыл бұрын
@@bethb8276chloramine is the common additive now, because chlorine is unstable. Chlorine take 1 to 5 days to evaporate naturally, about 24 hours if aerated, and about 15 to 20 minutes if boiled. A 5 gallon bucket would be on the long end of natural evaporation.

It's not complicating it with the air pump and Stone it's actually doing good it's better and you can use some molasses to even stimulate the microorganisms inside the good microorganisms the good bacteria it's not complicating it the way she did it is simple I don't want to offend her but it's the lazy way the easiest way you can get to make a simple compost tea is the way she did it but you have a chance for bad bacteria to set in without oxygen

Hello, I like your method of making compost tea. I like to use a few 5 gallon buckets with two holes drilled on each side generally 1ft - 2ft from the bottom. Fill with compost and allow it to collect rain water. After it rains, I'll collect the compost tea and save for future watering. It starts to stink and attract flies after awhile so store it in a container that can be sealed. Happy Gardening. Travis J.
@Nimbleful2 жыл бұрын
This made me wonder if smelly compost tea is safe - i did a search and this came up: "Compost tea should not have an unpleasant odor; it should smell earthy and yeasty. So, if your compost tea smells bad, there is a problem" "If your compost has a nasty odor, don’t use it. It may actually harm the plants. Chances are good that you need better aeration. Insufficient aeration is allowing harmful bacteria to grow and these guys stink. The longer it sits, the more likely dangerous bacteria will start to grow."

I appreciate the "kiss" method of doing things, the more complicated things get the less likely I am to keep up with it. While some ideas are good and not overly complicated like using a paint strainer bag for the compost, or adding an aeration system, I still like knowing it doesn't have to be done to actually work.

We have chloramine instead of chlorine in our water supply, and I was told by a botanist that it can take weeks to dissipate before it won't destroy bacteria in the compost. If anybody reading this has the same predicament, we have begun to make our compost tea with distilled water. We use a tote and make 5 gallons at a time every 2 weeks.

since my compost bin is a modified kitchen garbage can, i can collect the fluid after a rain. If i prop it up on two bricks inside a galvanized metal bin I found that someone chucked, i can passively collect compost tea as it forms. I ladle it out with an old peanut butter jar and dilute it into a 5 gallon bucket of water. The effect is weaker but i'm a container gardener, I need less at a time and more frequently in terms of food and water for the plants. It looks and smells nasty as hell, but its low work and i can grab it if there's any on demand without having to wait. I also pour compostable material directly around the base of the stem of some plants, I spilled a bunch of wild black raspberries this morning onto my dirty bedroom carpet while i was sorting them, put them around the base of a tomato plant directly. And by the way, between the heat and gravity they're squeezing themselves to mush and releasing fluid into the soil as they do. There should be some nice raspberry shoots next year. It isn't pretty by any means but it works. >.> put it on my lettuce drawers too.
@sjr78227 жыл бұрын
I did the same with a plastic trash barrel, for the kitchen comporting, with a hole in the bottom, sitting on cement blocks, over a dollar store dish pan to catch the fluids. I water down the dripping before putting on plants.

i dont know how important it is that your beneficial bacteria survives due to chlorine in your water supply, but you may want to look into your local municipal water treatment plant to see if they now use chloramines, which is chlorine and ammonia compound? that stays active in the water for longer periods of time and do not evaporate off in 24 hours like regular chlorine.

I am too impatient to wait for the compost in the compost bin to fully decompose. So I make compost tea with around two litres of partially decomposed compost available at the bottom of the bin. After I have finish watering with the compost tea, I put the soggy half decomposed compost back in the compost bin to continue decomposing. We have filtered water from the garden hose so there is no need to wait for chlorine evaporation. I don't care if the tea is weak or strong. I don't like waiting.:)

Some municipalities use chloramine and not chlorine. Be advised that chloramine does not dissipate in the air after 24 hours. It can take weeks. Therefore, use a filter designed to filter out chloramine, like one made with vitamin C crystals. I do not know if pouring Vitamin C crystals in the bucket will work but have seen others doing this. I'd like to see you do a video explaining how your garden looks like it has been cleaned by a maid service. Mine is a mess compared to your immaculate beauty.

Hi! I was shocked how simple making compost tea is. Now how do you compost? I’m practically a neonate, newbie gardener still trying to figure things out. TIA
@CaliKim29Ай бұрын
Hey there! Composting is a fantastic way to nourish your garden naturally. Here's a beginner-friendly guide to get you started: Choose a Bin or Pile: You can compost in a bin, a designated area of your yard, or even a compost tumbler. Make sure it's at least 3 feet by 3 feet for effective composting. Add Ingredients: Composting is all about balance. Add "browns" (carbon-rich materials like leaves, cardboard) and "greens" (nitrogen-rich materials like kitchen scraps, grass clippings). Aim for a 3:1 ratio of browns to greens. Turn and Mix: Every couple of weeks, turn your compost with a pitchfork or compost aerator to aerate it and help it break down faster. This also helps distribute moisture and air evenly. Maintain Moisture: Your compost should be as moist as a wrung-out sponge. If it's too dry, add water; if too wet, add more browns. Patience: Composting takes time-about 2-6 months for finished compost, depending on conditions. You'll know it's ready when it's dark, crumbly, and smells earthy. Use Your Compost: Spread your finished compost around your garden beds as a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Your plants will love it! Remember, composting is a learning process, and you'll discover what works best for your garden over time. Enjoy the journey of creating nutrient-rich soil and happy gardening! Kim

Why use water from a spigot? Why not get yourself a rain barrel, collect the rain water, and use it!!! You should also look at ELECTROCULTURE. I make my own tea, and do electroculture, and I grow veggies that weigh upwards of 1.5-2 lbs+ each!!! Your strawberries are tiny compared to mine---8-9 oz per berry!

Can you use this on cuttings please that have rooted in water and are ready for putting into soil. Could I put them in soil and pour compost tea on them?

Thanks for the tip but I like to ask about your strawberry Tower how did you build it me and my sweetie I'm going to get her a garden going and we have strawberries. So if you can give me any tips on that, I would appreciate it. I'm making a compost now first time. And I'll see how it goes. Thanks. Much love
