Making Custom Knife Knife Handle using stabilized Oak Scales
This is a custom knife order for a gunsmith at Owens Armory in Prescott, Arizona.. Thomas requested a stabilized oak knife handle with a forced patina finish on one of my classic designs.
He also requested the handle to look like aged barn wood with a lot of texture. I used a wire wheel to texture the knife handle and coated the oak wood with teak oil to bring out the natural color.
I used mustard to force a patina on this custom high carbon EDC creating a unique pattern in the steel with a satin finish.
Thanks For Watching!!

Music is a little (a lot) distracting, and you might have added value by explaining the fine points of what you were doing. For example, what material did you use for the metal pins" that pierce the knife? Did you deliberately cut the handle a bit over-sized to allow for sanding and shaping? Did you flatten the ends of the pins on your vise or just hammer them through a tight hole?

Micarta is a fancy name for rags or paper glued together. But that doesn't diminish its quality in any way, in fact, it's an amazingly good material for knife handles. A hundred years ago, it was called "phenolic board" and it was used for nearly anything that needed to look good and could be shaped into any form. It was amazingly durable as well, even making up machinery gears in many gases, as they ran more quietly and didn't need lubrication.

Cool mustard trick. Why did you grind after doing all that standing? Wouldn't that ruin the smoothness around where the pins are?

Dang it I'm lacking of all tools for it.. All I have is an electric stone grinder and everything else must be done by hand. I have made like 4 or 5 knifes and all of them had quite stupid looking handles, simply because it's not comfortable to do all those small details and curves by hand. Nice video tho. Now I'm planning on doing one knife as a gift and it HAS to be nice, making the blade itself is not the problem, but the handle is.. I have good wooden material for it, but I'm afraid that it may not come out as it should and it will look bad.

Sorry,, I don't understand,, if the surface of the scales, and the tang, are flat and smooth, and the whole assembly is clamped tight, forcing out nearly all of the glue, surely you're left with a microscopic layer of glue, which can't be very strong, ??.. I must be missing something,, !!

I finished my knife yesterday it's a 4 inch slip joint with m390 steel hoping it can become somewhat of a family heirloom, I had no experience in forging besides it being a trade my ancestors practiced and were known for metal works(Romany) the knifes got a nice half stop and solid flip action,it is one hand opening but its main purpose is to be able to take alota damage in my pocket amongs my keys and wateva else is in there and peel apples and stuff I used m390 due to its strength I hand carved my handle for the most part and lightly smoothed it out to still give it that natural wood grainy look, with abit of lacquer and it looked all good it's just I'm not to satisfied with the handle material so I'll keep it on till I find something I feel more comfortable with but it was my first decent knife I've made I've forged alota knives but given up half way everytime this knife however I've been forging since June 2020 and it's basically the beginning of October so I took my time yes but it came out pretty much fantastic and I love watching forged in fire you learn a lot I also follow the judges on their private social media pages amongs others
