Thank you man for this video - I watched like 20 videos and everyone starts off so promising like “ok today is a DIY GRASS VIDEO” but then half way through the video these guys pull out pre brought stuff? Bags of flock using coffee grinders etc, or a $100 static grass tool… I live in the middle of nowhere, not only is all this store bought stuff expensive but also takes so long to get to me. You even covered flowers and more advanced looking stuff!! I’ve been looking for something very professional looking but actually diy and these techniques are exactly it. 🎉

I agree that huge savings can be made by using stuff that is laying around. I used a worn-out house broom for my reeds. I used badly weathered MDF to make my own static grass. I broke up the fluffy stuff and put it into a small cheap coffee grinder, have it a whizz, add artist's acrylic direct from the tube mixed to whatever colour you want, give it a whizz and there you have it. After it is completely dry,give it a light whizz again to separate any fibres. It can be rubbed through a sieve to separate different lengths. Apply as usual.

Hey thanks for watching and for your input. I like your ideas! I do more diorama building than I do terrain that is related and has to have continuity. I have “one off” tricks and techniques that I haven’t put in a video but plan too and if I use your techniques I’ll not forget to mention where they came from. Thank you again

Great video. I am always looking for inexpensive or free ideas for scenery as buying it can get expensive and I figure spend the money where it is needed like track and trains. I am excited to try some of your ideas. Just starting an o scale layout. Keep up the good work.

It is advisable to wear a mask when whizzing up the MDF as the dust has formaldehyde glue in it. My preferred choice for applying the grass is a tapered plastic detergent bottle(not my idea). Put the static grass into the bottle, put the cap on, shake the bottle up and down to charge the grass and at the bottom of the stroke, squeeze the bottle to expel the grass. You can easily direct it into areas where static grass applicator cannot reach. Ok for large areas too. Useful for blending colours also as it is shaken.

Hey Roland, not sure if you have seen my last video, but I gave you a shout out on this technique. But… I screwed it up somehow and just ended up with dust?? Maybe I blended it too long or maybe because I used water damaged MDF?
@rolandhersom239

@@Wesardry my MDF had been standing in the rain and whatever for about 18 months. The fibres do have some variation in length and by seiving it you can get various lengths which is useful. I don't have it on my coffee grinder for very long Just long enough to separate the fibres. Maybe some forms of MDF are composed of shorter fibres than the one I used. Mine was a very ordinary stock standard sheet I inherited. I add the artists acrylic paint directly from the tube onto the fluffed up fibres in the coffee grinder. It doesn't take much. Generally I use around 5 drops of ultramarine blue to 2 drops of bright yellow. I do not measure the drops and this can give rise to slight colour variations which is good because when the batches are mixed together and applied to the area being modeled, the result is not an unnatural all one colour. A mask is advisable when applying the grass because, although the paint has sealed the fine glue dust to the fibres, when using the squeeze bottle applicator, some fibres do tend to become airborne. Don't give up, try it again. Experiment with colour mixing of the acrylics to get the desired shade.

@rolandhersom239 Sweet! I’ve always wanted to visit Australia, and of course New Zealand after LOTR and Weta workshop. The snakes in Australia I find fascinating.. but having arachnophobia you all can keep those freak ass spiders you have! Good news is, if I ever get to travel there I now know someone who’s a fellow nerd 😁 I live in Iowa “The Heartland” of America. But make this clear although Trump has huge support in this state I’m NOT one of THOSE people😂😂 I’m sane

I believe that there is only one good kind of spider and that is a dead one. In my shed where the railway is, spiders are inevitable but I have a couple of Gekkos that take care of the spiders and as a result the layout is free of webs on top and especially underneath where a spider's web problem used to exist before they moved in a few years ago. Having to pickup a few little white hard dropping pills is a small price to pay for their services. They come out and chirp and we have a short conversation and they moved their little heads around looking at me as I talk. You should talk to your friends and they certainly are mine. Better shut up now or you may begin to wonder if I have all my marbles like someone else we mentioned before😊
