Thanks for sharing. I've been eyeing this type of drawer bottom plane. FYI, you can buy 1/16" thick tool steel from McMaster. I know this because, I bought some. I want to make my own 1/16" chisel. Yea, for that one time in my life when I will need it. Will make it beefy and more like a mortise chisel so it can withstand use by hand.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
You can always replace a big chisel with a little chisel. But you can never replace a little chisel. The carving chisel I had was only about 100th of an inch too wide so just took a few strokes on the course diamond plate to bring it down a thickness. Otherwise I probably would have made a thinner chisel for it

Good to see the kerfing plane again. I still use my version of your build often on various projects that require a long rabbet or groove.

As the drawer bottom planes are rarely in stock at RRR, I have considered picking up this kit. However, my old brain also remembered a quick and dirty way to buy a drawer bottom plane. Months ago, I bought 3/4" matched planes for making panels. The grooving plane makes a 1/4" wide groove offset by 1/4" from the edge. However, since matched planes need a bit more depth in the groove, it cuts the groove about 5/16" deep. As long as you are not making thin drawer sides, my lazy+frugal side gives a thumbs up to the 3/4" grooving plane.

It's interesting to me that you said the tools you make aren't generally quite as good as the tools you buy. I don't have alot of money to put into tools, so generally my experience has been that the tools I make far outperform the tools I can actually afford. Given that tool making was a specialty for a long time I suppose it isn't too surprising. We can't all be Stavros Gakos, getting there would be really time consuming.

Beautiful plane, James. Ipé is no joke when you're working with hand tools. I've made a number of Japanese style hammers with Ipé heads (2x2 stock), and I can't believe how hard it is to cut the mortices in them without it chipping out.

You can buy a used table saw blade and use the plate to make a tool to cut that thin groove. Or a blade for 45. It’s a cheap source for hardened or hardenable steel. That does involve an angle grinder though.

I misspoke there. I should have said a self-centering punch not a center punch. A self-centering punch will center itself in the chamfered hole. Here you go amzn.to/44Q1W37

Hello James, considering this tool to make the grooves for botton drawers, what wood be the recommendable distance between the groove and the botton edge? I did a much more humble groove plane that leaves just 5mm and my problem is when I layout a half--blind dove tail trying to make the groove in the tails in order to hide the groove from side, I have 1 or 2 mm for the pin....I hope made myselft clear, Im not a native English speaker. Regards from Buenos Aires

It is personal preference but I put my groove 1/4" (6mm) up from the bottom.

With the steel skate is just more durable. The wooden version will wear out faster and is more susceptible to expansion and contraction.

hi! is it possible to make a T shape groove with hand tools?? I´ve only seen them being made by a power router with a special bit
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 9 ай бұрын
Sure. You can do it with a router plane, scratch stock, or dedicated chisel. Most of the time they are constructed rather then cut.

Question about marking tools If someone has bad eyes, I am 70+, what about using chalk to mark the cuts from markers do you think it would give enough contrast?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 7 күн бұрын
most of the time for better contrast people use a lead holder or felt pen. the wider the mark the less accurate the cut. but enough contrast is up to the viewer.

How does this plane differ from a tongue plane (half of a T&G set)?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
A tongue plane makes the tongue so it has two irons side by side. This is the grooving plane that makes the groove for the tongue to fit into.
@redrosereproductions9526
@redrosereproductions9526 Жыл бұрын
The tongue plane form a 3/4"match plane set cuts a similar groove, but the depth stop is fixed at 3/8" rather than 1/4" deep. Or at least the match planes I make are that way.
