Most decent API/"old school transformer console" plugins will let you use a sidechain filter input for the compressor...... Just active the "filter", set the HP to 600, the LP to 2.5k-ish, and send this signal as 'SC'. Now the compressor will only respond to this bandwidth (600-2.5k). As long you set a slow attack and fast release, you should get a nice smack sound. Keep the channel EQ at the end of the signal path and then you can touch up the low end and add some 'air' as you need.

Modern mix made easy; saturation Hi pass compress Eq more saturation/color Paralell compression Multiband compression Bus saturation and limiting -Do it on each track -Repeat on the group busses -Repeat again on the Master bus

With the NLS are they just the buss version? Do you have the channel version feeding into the busses? Why so many? I’m now wondering if I’ve been using that NLS pack wrong )))

I run my hat and overheads into the parallel but I try 2 things... I always DeEss the hat and overheads. Take it a step further I may DeEss the parallel bus a tiny bit to where it catches the aggressive hi end and it smooths it out a bit. Give it a shot!! Btw I'm liking this technique you're showing I wanna try it as well!!! Keep the dope vids coming!!!

Overheads can be lowpassed, but yes, de essing at least the hats is essential

Never thought about the NLS - I have plenty of alternatives already. Don't forget what too much does with CPU power.

Why would saturation give you more punch? Isn’t saturation shaving the transient off. Never understood this.

HARMONICS! That's really the answer... Imagine you have a fundamental freq at 1k and you add odd and even harmonics to that 1k sine wave...

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think saturating the signal while shaving off the transient still provides the same "perceived" loudness while making the signal punchier due to added harmonics

Saturation - gives you harmonics the way up, but less loud. So total loudness is perceived more. Harmonics the way down is not very interesting for acoustic drums - there's synths for that

This is sounding kind of synthetic to me, it is good don't get me wrong, but compared to the rock songs Chris lord alge is mixing I find his drums are sounding more natural and i like that better..

A lot of it is about the source. CLA mix some of the best drummer around and recorded in the best studio. Those tracks are also recorded through his wall of analog hardware. That's just how it was back in his hey day.

Completely different styles... These drums should NOT sound natural, that's not what I was going for at all on this song.
