I have been using this recipe for about 7 years. It is always a winner. I make one rectangular cake, slice it when cold into top half and bottom half, to sandwich lemon cream in the middle. Then I make a glaze with the same cocoa powder, icing sugar, 1 ounce of cream cheese, dashes of Angostura Bitters, vanilla essence. I soften it with drops of evaporated milk. The glaze really enhances this wonderful cake. Trinidad & Tobago.

This is the best chocolate cake recipe I've ever made - and I'm an experienced baker. I took the advice of others and used a whole cup of good quality cocoa, added a heaped teaspoon of instant coffee to the boiling water, and sieved all the dry ingredients together. It needed the full 35 minutes to be perfect!! I sandwiched it together with my friend's sweet ginger plum sauce. Absolutely delicious, moist and holds together very well.

Thanks for your question, Thy Nguyễn. You may use baking powder to replace the baking soda. To use baking powder instead of baking soda, you need to use 3 times more baking powder. For example, if the recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of baking soda, you will need to add 3 teaspoons of baking powder. Baking powder will have a slight effect on the taste of what you are making, but it won’t be significant.

Hi, Erana Bennett - Yes, to make a single cake, you will use half the amount of each ingredient. To make it easy to determine these amounts, open the recipe page (allrecipes.com/Recipe/One-Bowl-Chocolate-Cake-III/Detail.aspx) and find the line "Original recipe makes 3 pounds" (or whatever the finished amount is for the recipe). Just to the right of this line, click on "Change Servings." This opens a new line with a box to change the number of servings. The recipe's original amount automatically shows in the box; for this cake, it's 24 servings. Type in "12" to indicate half the serving number, and then click on “Adjust Recipe” just to the right. All the ingredient amounts will immediately change to the new serving size. Enjoy the cake!

Baking soda is an alkaline, Baking powder is an alkaline and mixed with an acid which produces a gas and makes a cake rise. Baking soda mixed with cream of tartar has the same result. Self rising flour is regular flour with baking powder mixed in. the problem with self rising flour, is that it goes flat very quickly, therefore it's better to use all purpose flour with baking powder mixed into it. I hope that answers a lot of questions that people have about baking

One more, I reduced a lot of sugar. I think the recipe use too much sugar. The cake came out nicely. Dense enough but light & moist. Delicious. Thanks for the recipe!

+Allrecipes I noticed many chocolate cake recipes call for hot water. Why is that???? Is the water the reason for the addition of so much leavening??? With the added milk & salt it makes for a cake very high in sodium. Is there a way to make chocolate cake with sour cream instead of milk, without all the salt & with far less leavening much like some pound cake recipes?

I turned made this cake and I turned it into something kinda like a cake pop I made double chocolate cake balls. I made the chocolate cake, let it cool, then I cut the top of it off, I crumbled it up and mixed in so bitter cream icing that I made from around 1/2 and 1 whole cup of powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons of butter softened and a splash of vanilla extract. Also when you make the icing you kinda just add different amounts of powdered sugar and butter until you like it. Then you mix that into the crumbs, you roll the cake mix into little balls, then you freeze them. After they have been chilling in the freezer for about 30 to 45 mins you heat up some milk chocolate chips and dip the cake balls into the melted chocolate chips, place them on a plate and put them into the fridge to harden the melted chocolate. Then after about 15 to 20 mins enjoy!!! There so good!!!!😋😋

I've tried manyy recipes using many complex methods.. But this is my favourite... The end results are just amazing.. The cake turns out to be very spongy and delicious..The only extra thing i do is ..I just add 1 tspn of instant coffee in the batter to enhance the chocolate flavour a bit.. Thanks for the recipe😊

I halved the recipe (except eggs. Oops) and made slight substitutions, and it was great! It took 20-25 minutest to bake, and it was not super sweet, but not plain either. If anyone wants to know what worked for me: 95 g (1/2 cup) brown sugar 95 g (1/2 cup) pure cane sugar 105 g (7/8 cup) flour 30 g (6 Tbsp) cocoa powder 12 g baking powder to cover the elimination of bicarbonate soda 1 tsp salt 2 eggs 44 g condensed milk (1/4 cup) mixed with 1/4 cup (~59 mL) water for milk 54 g (1/4 cup) oil a couple splashes of boiling water because the batter was already thin with the above

u do want to leave the butter out and substitute it with oil. First the texture of the cake changes as it becomes more fluffy and light, second it makes a huge difference in the taste !! tried it myself and I wasn't the only one who noticed the difference !!
