Man I'm not even done this video .....I thought you were straight up nuts with your approach to this....damn I'm eating my words. Definitely a strange approach but VERY effective. The foil tape is just crazy good. It makes sooo many things better. I've typically sprayed super 77 from 3m and install foil on it. The tape at the edges would be golden. Is it safe to assume the clay was dry before you taped it? Or was it the oil type clay that doesn't harden. I'm going to be building a faux vw bus in the next couple months with a foam base....the window detail and trip will be made so much better with the clay. Thanks for the tips.

@Neda Nother it is an non drying clay made specifically for automotive applications. It's soft when heated and firm when cool perfect for tooling.. I try to use common tools in my videos so everyone can feel these job are achievable without spending alot of money. Thanks for the comment, i appreciate it.

@TheInkhousecustoms

Well each resin has its properties, I use fiberglass resin for : rigid parts, ease of use, and fast dry times. Epoxy resin for : adhesions, flexibility and durability So what every fits the properties you want for your applications.

Good work dude! Is the clay you're using an air drying clay? May I suggest in future sealing the clay with G4 pond sealer give it a flat down then just spray on PVA release agent? It's a much quicker process. Looking forward to seeing this project finished.
@TheInkhousecustoms
@TheInkhousecustoms 2 жыл бұрын
@BenTV the clay I use is not an air drying clay, it is an oil base Plasticine clay, specifically made for automotive design. I take the extra step to protect the clay from junk and fiberglass from getting into it, seeing that I reuse the clay. Its an extra step but that what I feel is the best way to getting the lowest profile to the clay, before laying the glass.

@Casey Chan unfortunately for me I didn't use PVA, but I definitely will use it next time around. The PVA goes after the wax. You must wax the mold first defore putting anything down.

how much weight did you save with fiberglass parts? how much in hood? awesome project!
@TheInkhousecustoms
@TheInkhousecustoms 3 жыл бұрын
@LUKA that is a interesting question. I should make a video on this. Even though I didn't put the parts on a scale. The weight difference with the hood is alot.. with the metal hood it had to be lifted with two hands and some effort , with the fiberglass hood one hand , Plus it just looks cooler than stock. But thanks on a good topic the make a vid about 👍💯

@TheInkhousecustoms
@TheInkhousecustoms 3 жыл бұрын
@@lukatrades the doors. Would not be that hard. It can done in the same process that I'm doing with the bumper. Take a mold using the existing door as the plug.. it would be three parts, inner frame, outer skin and window rail. Imagination and planning is key when building parts. Hope the information helps.

How did you make the reinforcements shown towards the end? And how do you decide placement generally?
@TheInkhousecustoms
@TheInkhousecustoms 2 жыл бұрын
The reinforcements are silicone tubing hot glued in place, then fiberglassed over. applied after surface has cured. For placement of reinforcements, I do over long areas and areas that make for the most rigid mold. Basically to keep the mold from twisting and deflecting when making parts. Fiberglass parts can warp in a mold if the mold is not strong.

If your getting pin holes in your gel coat, it's because one of your release products haven't dried properly. When Appling wax allow to dry and wipe or polish out, the apply your PVA and let dry completely. Then apply your gel coat.
