Ooo!😬 I put stuff in my totes, but not fine and grainy like yours. I put twigs in bottom, then a layer of torn up brown paper, a whole lot of kitchen food scraps, then a bit of certified organic soil, then some partially composted compost, grass clippings from the mower bag, and lastly more c.o. potting soil. I don’t have any available area to dig up my yard soil.

Hi Gary good info. I remember when you started the woodchips lol I remember the guy came over with a bobcat and moved the chips around because you were running out of room and they didn't want to leave your place because they had a big job near by and it would have cost them money to dump the wood chips. lol I believe in places you had several feet thick I believe. lol But now it all paid off. Cheers

Good evening, Gary. Just wanted to let you know my Passion Flower is still doing well in her new portable trellis home. We've at least another month before our last frost...difficult to say because we had snow again yesterday.); The good thing is, I'm receiving the knowledge you & Robbie share which will help me have an abundant garden this season. I was so depressed because my spinal impairments have gotten worse. Planting in the ground just wouldn't allow me to care for the garden in a proper & loving manner. Planting a garden in totes & bakery buckets will be a godsend. Your tips are life altering for me.(: I just found out my doctor is ill, so I won't be seeing her for another month. I'd already planned to surprise her with a bucket filled with flowers & herbs. A few of my cherry tomato seedlings are growing well. I think she might like one of those too. Take care, ~ Covah

I love that you not only explained each step, but also actually showed the process of making soil. Thanks for the information. I believe this will help many first time gardeners! Do you also add worm castings?
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Жыл бұрын
Thank you, your welcome. I'm creating a living soil. The earthworms either migrate in or are present in the top soil. They feed and deposit castings directly in the containers. The green matter that we add composts in place to feed them.

If you buy compost/manure it's only around 3 dollars a bag then add some sand you have good soil. Add blood meal that's high in nitrogen. Great soil to grow any vegetables

@@darceyschultz2370 Commercial compost may contain herbicide/other contaminates, and even $3 a bag plus fertilizer adds up fast! Thats money that could be saved or spent on something else while I source my compost and fertilizer for free from my 100% organic backyard. 2nd year making my own potting mix. I make my own hot compost, leaf mold and raise a bunch of worms. I really do not have to purchase any soil amendments or fertilizers. My only problem, last year I found jumping worms in my Ruth Stout potato and onion bed. I also found some jumping worms in last years leaf mold bin. Because or the jumping worms, I completely changed my potato/onion bed, plus last fall I constructed what I hope is a jumping worm proof leaf mold bin. I hate buying crap at the big box stores, and do not follow popular store bought organic fertilizers. I did spend some money on a microscope so I could get better at composting and making my own fertilizers. So far it has paid off. Stay Well!!!
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian. So far the jumping worms haven't got here yet. Hopefully our climate and dry conditions will stop them or at least slow them down. The main amendment I purchase to lower our Ph to grow blue berries and josta berries.

Hello from NE Canada 😊 absolutely Fabulous instructional video!! I will be sharing this with many people I know new to gardening. Even as a seasoned gardener I appreciate the level of detail and personal experience you've shared that shows this to be a good mix for vegies in containers. I've always been hesitant with vegies in pots, likely because I've had land...lol but I'm sure as any good gardner knows you can never have enough land for gardens, I've flat out run out of space 😅 Thank you!!! Btw I've only just discovered your site, and pleasantly surprised that you have many more on your channel, I'll be serial watching them for certain. I like your NO TALK/LECTURE and Just do it style! I have saved a lot of cardboard over the winter also shredded plain mail and egg cartons that can go in the bottom with the twigs/wood.

Your audio in this is great Gary, you and Robbie always have amazing audio. Thank you for this we are all shocked with the prices we are seeing for bagged soil in the big box store. Clay soils sounds a bit better than our native sandy soil, so much flushes through it.

Thanks. At my families home in Australia we had sandy soil. My father is a keen gardener and he added a lot of organic material. I remember someone visiting from the garden club commenting that his soil looked like chocolate. Adding organic matter helps to hold water and nutrients.

@@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Thank you, yes, time for me to figure out a way to get more organic mater down, living in an HOA my yard is small, so may need to use more bins. Sadly, the snails love my raised beds that are vinyl like our fence, so going to make the snails and slugs a couple little beer swimming pools. 😂

I do this on a larger scale, but those totes are an awesome idea for smaller crops for me. I have a lot of leftovers from all my guinea pig cages. The used hay and bedding, along with the poops make great compost additions. The used wood shavings also make a great mulch with a built in fertilizer. Its a great way to reuse all the leftovers instead of putting it in the garbage. I figured since I didn't have chickens, the guinea pig waste is valuable as well since they love the veggies from all my gardens.

Thanks. I grow both inground and in containers. Containers give me extra options for different crops and different sites to grow in. If I had guinea pigs I'd certainly be using that valuable resource.

I am.just a novice gardener but I have long thought your approach is right. I also don't waste weeds...they have nutrients too that can be put back in soil. I use sticks too at the bottom to retain moisture and add food and it is always so rewarding to see the rich stuff at the bottom when I redo pots. Excellent video with great camera skill. Thanks!!!

Robbie has grown corn in totes. To get better wind pollination 2 or more can be sat together to create a cube.

You're giving proof of how it works. I'm in my second year and growing more healthy food using less space. And with less back breaking work. Yes, I said healthy food. Not all soil have the makeup to grow healthy food. I'm so glad I got started. Thank you both so very much.

Do these plastics add microplastics to your soil and food?
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Жыл бұрын
Thanks. In life there's no way to avoid plastic. If anything it would be minimal. The molecules of microplastics are too large to pass through a plants cell membrane. Here's a link to a video Robbie did on plastic kzfaq.info/get/bejne/padzqL1_qb6xh6c.html
