All the exchange students I've known who have stayed in the USA for a while have told me that we overdo courtesy, that is, greet people far more than necessary, especially in shops. :-) Having been abroad, I see it's true. It's easy enough to be respectful and polite without being oppressive or cheapening the gestures. The dark side of overdoing courtesy is that neglect and covert hostility stand out for the very absence of overdoing it. Bigotry often shows itself this way. Best to be equally polite in moderation to all strangers.

As an addition to the English native speakers: the informal you "ти" is also only singular. The formal you "Ви" (with a capital 'B') is also the informal you in the plural form when not written with a capital 'в'. 1) "Звідки ти?", 2) "Звідки ви?" and 3) "Звідки Ви?" all is "Where are you from?", but 1) is informal when asking one person, 2) is informal when asking several persons, but 3) is formal. I'm German and there we've got the same three differentiations (But different: in German we use the 3rd person plural "Sie" with a capital letter as formal, but also some other regular form with a capital letter.)

I have something in common with this Ukrainian woman on Twitter (we both love cats; she has 7 of them) and she STILL refuses to acknowledge that I exist. I've thought maybe I should stop being friends with her. I've never gotten a single response from her, not even about her cats. The other woman, who's 19 now, doesn't respond either. I don't know if that's because young people don't talk to old people in Ukraine or what else it could be. I'd just like to know what I do that makes people either cuss me out (American users do) or they go off the idea of talking to me soon after they meet me.
