Use good fragrance undiluted, and make sure you extract the oil same day you got it

I was in 78-80 in Togo, and there were soaps for sale on the road side (massive stacks). However, I'm pretty sure Glycerin and Ethanol were not readily available in their purified form, or were pretty penny at the time... Is there an older more "traditional" way of making soap in your area? Also, what is the ambient temperature when you're preparing? It looks there's a fair amount of sun...
