Following on from my 'How to Scan Your Artwork (ON A BUDGET) video, I show you how turn your scanned artwork into your own greeting cards that you can sell on Etsy, at markets and on your own website.
If your artwork has a white background like mine, I'll also show you how to remove that quickly and easily with Affinity Photo.
If you need to scan your artwork, please watch this video first:

You’re welcome Jane! Good question, I think for more textured pieces of work photographing it with a good quality camera would be more suitable? I’ve never tried that method myself but I think there are lots of videos showing you how on KZfaq ☺️

You're very welcome! Yes I would recommend it to anyone. I used to use Photoshop but I wouldn't go back to it now, Affinity is just as good but a fraction of the price. It does the job for what I need it for ☺️

thank you for the videos, love them! , Im in Lancashire too, nr Preston :) I'm at the beginning of trying to set up to sell greeting cards of my art but instead of printing off and taking a photo of each individual card Do you know if there's a way of doing a mock up using the affinity photo app ? thank you

Thank you I'm glad you're loving the videos! Not far from me then I'm just outside of Garstang 😄 Yes there'll probably be a way, Etsy have lots of mockups for sale that you can just edit your designs onto. Something like this: etsy.me/3ruvYZk etsy.me/34qxOBz You'd just have to cut your image of the artwork out and position it onto the blank card. Hope this helps!

I was just trying out the Affinity photo to remove background and it works well as you explained. Have one question. Where do you get your colour balance done professionally for prints. Thanks. L
@shannonmullin
@shannonmullin 2 жыл бұрын
I’m glad it worked for you! I used to get it done at my local fine art printers but more recently I’ve been ordering prints online instead, so I’ve just been doing it myself. I tend to put the artwork next to the screen and play around with the colour balance until it looks most accurate. I’d love to do a test print but most of the time now I just send them to print with the online company and hope for the best- turns out pretty accurate 90% of the time which works for me ☺️🤣

Hi there! I'm glad you found the video useful! Hmm that's strange the only thing I can think of is perhaps the wrong layer is selected? Just check which layer it is you're on and make sure that it's the artwork layer and that it's unlocked. Other than that maybe you have accidentally included the artwork itself in the selection? If you are still stuck feel free to email me a photo or video and I'll take a look and do my best to help! :) shannonmullinportraits@gmail.com

Hi Shannon. I love your art and i think your videos are very informative. They help very much as i am learning to be a pencil artist myself. I noticed you use Affinity Photo as the platform where you edit your work in preparation for creating greetings cards etc. It seems quite a detailed programme with loads to learn. May i ask how you learned it all to be able to get around everything and understand what you needed to know so you can run your business professionaly. Did it take you long to learn this? It's just there seems to be more to running an art buisiness than just doing the art. Can you offer any help with this please? You seem to know your way around the programme without any trouble. Thanks Paul...

Hi Paul, thank you so much for your comment I'm glad you like the videos! That's fantastic that you're delving into pencil work, keep it up :) Before I got Affinity I was really into playing around with Photoshop and trying to make things with it. I used to watch youtube tutorials on how to do things, and then when I went to university I had to use it as part of my course so I developed my skills in tutorials and classes, but the bulk of what I've learnt was from KZfaq. I'm quite lucky that I've been using it so long it's more familiar to me now and Affinity is very similar to Photoshop so the transition wasn't too confusing. I think the best thing to do is learn the basics with KZfaq tutorials, and google anything you're struggling with - that's what I always do when I get stuck! It might take you a while to get your head around but once you figure out the process it becomes a little easier. I learnt the hard way that there's so much more to an art business than just sitting down and drawing. It's taken me years to figure out how to do the extras such a website, cards, prints and youtube so don't be hard on yourself if you don't master the program straight away :)

@@shannonmullin I can see you have taken your time to reply back to me Shannon. Please accept my thanks as it is so vital to get responsible replies from professsionals. I am grateful and i will take in what you have advised in your reply. As i work completely alone it's a case that i have to do everything myself and sometimes the obvious thing might just pass me by as my head is always full. Somtimes i miss things. I can see you have done well though with your art business and it looks as if you've set it up properly. I really do wish you well Shannon and as i continue to watch your youtube video's there may always be something i can learn. All the best now...Paul

@@paulmccaffrey3 It's my pleasure! When you're starting your own business you feel like you're doing the job of about 10 or more people and it is so overwhelming. I had no idea what I was doing at all to begin with but the passion to draw was enough to force me to gradually learn everything else. I still feel like I have a long way to go but I'm 10 steps ahead of where I used to be, so I'll do anything I can to help others who are at the beginning of their journey like I was! Every day I learn something new and become more confident so I hope I can help you to do the same :)

Watching this video has been so helpful! We have the Epson ET-8550 and are we having difficulty printing any of our artwork clearly on the tintoretto gesso card; they all seem to come out a little blurry, even though we have tried to follow your guidelines. The only difference we have is that we don't have the option for ColourSync on our Affinity v2 software. Like you have said before, learning about these colour profiles and icc profiles is so mind-boggling and we feel like our heads might explode! If there are any pointers that you can give us, we would really appreciate it. Thank you! 😊 P.S we have found a tintoretto gesso crema icc profile, but haven't used this yet. However, from watching your vids, you didn't seem to use a icc profile for the tintoretto card (if this is correct)?

I’m so glad it was helpful!! Out of curiosity what DPI is your document set to? You might also need to select the ‘best quality’ option on the print settings on Affinity. It’s where you select the paper type 😊 I found a way around the ICC profiles because no matter what I did they never came out right 😂 I suppose I’ve just done it manually rather than selecting a pre-determined profile?

Hi Shannon. We have set the document DPI to 400 as that is the highest it will go and we choose best quality for the printing as well. We have it set as 'plain paper' type, but don't know if we should use the 'fine art' paper type or if you use a different paper type or not to print? Thank you so much for all your help! ☺ @@shannonmullin
