Make your own grow bags from landscape fabric using this easy pattern.
Written instructions: ➜empressofdirt.net/sew-grow-bags/

Fabric grow bags have become popular in recent years because they are inexpensive to make, lightweight, can be used for any container plants, and fold up for easy winter storage. They are a smart option for small balconies or patios. I also use them around my garden.
Landscape fabric like the product shown here is made from polypropylene. This is the same stuff that things like yogurt containers are made of. It's a non-woven fabric, also called a geotextile. It is breathable (lets oxygen in) and porous (drains water more than other containers like clay or plastic).
The more layers you use for your bag, the better they retain moisture. I made mine with two layers of 7-year landscape fabric. You could also use a more heavy-duty version of the same product.
If you add handles to your small or medium-size bags, you can also hang them from hooks or on a fence or wall.

WEBBING (optional, for handles) | amzn.to/3BL7mPJ
The sewing instructions here are for beginners: it's all straight seams.
The same instructions work for any size grow bag: mini, small, medium, large, or extra large. You can cut your pieces to any custom size and do the same steps to get a finished bag.
The medium bag shown in the video (12-inches in diameter) was made with:
(4) 18-x18-inch pieces of landscape fabric
(2) 18-inch pieces of webbing for handles (1-inch wide)
The total cost to make one bag with handles is approximately $1.50.
The webbing for handles costs the most--see if you can find second hand webbing on a purse or bag at a thrift store.
Please see the tutorial for complete instructions.

You are a saint, I appreciate you posting this. You are allowing people who want to try gardening for the first time (me) - or, those who simply want to increase the size of their garden - do so regardless of economic status! I NEVER would have thought trying to grow some vegetables would become so expensive... with buying pots, the amount of soil you need to fill them, seeds, a couple hand tools/gloves, and the option of plant fertilizers & feed it all really adds up. Pots are the most expensive item in my experience, and soil being a close second - this is HUGE for me, thank you.

You just saved me a bucketload of money. ^^ I‘m starting gardening this year and considered buying grow bags online. But making them like this beats any of them - and I know what the working conditions were like. 👍

This is exactly what I was looking for! Landscaping fabric makes so much sense! We made an accessible bathroom for my son and I want these on shelves in the shower. It will work even better than pots. Thanks so much

Instead of 4 separate pieces. Use 2 pieces. Fold them each in half. Then use the folded edges as the top of the bag then you won’t have to sew it.

i can make these from the work pants my son rips out (and i can't fix because it's the crotch and it never looks or fits right if i try to sew it back together.) all those carhartt's and levi's with crotch air conditioning. suddenly repurposed.

I made the large bag using the pattern guide on your website. It was huge. I ended up with two bags after I cut it down to be able to accommodate a tomato plant. I'm not sure what I'll plant in the other one. It's easy once the pieces are cut.

Do you think that adding the webbing between the 2 layers of each side, and then sewing the top down would make sturdier handles?
2 жыл бұрын
I wish I was better at sewing. I have wanted a large rectangle fabric pot for a long time. one that will easily fit in my 2x4 with a little space all around for air. I dont know if one that large would be sturdy or possible though. my guess it would be close to 40 gallons of soil

Right on!!! Thank you so much. Do you suppose I can get away with using duck cloth or canvas cloth? I'm guessing that it will deteriorate faster maybe in a couple years?
@empressofdirt
@empressofdirt 2 жыл бұрын
It would depend on the thickness, quality, and any finishes they have. In general, I would expect either fabric to stain and gradually rot. If you experiment, let me know how it goes.

Just as an fyi, most aquatic plants don't need a pot to grow, just put some rocks over their root mass and it should stay in place. If you just want/have a reason to use a pot, you do you but I have no idea if this fabric would work for such a purpose.

Thank you for the great video! Have you or anybody tried making a grow bag out of cotton/canvas? Would it work? I prefer natural material. Do you think it will work?
@empressofdirt
@empressofdirt 2 жыл бұрын
I like natural materials too but not for this purpose. You should try using a cotton or canvas shopping bag and see what you think. In general, natural materials will not hold enough water in the potting mix, stains show, and the fabric gradually rots.

My landscape fabric is 15 year. Would you still recommend doubling the fabric?
@empressofdirt
@empressofdirt 3 жыл бұрын
You may not need to. I double the other stuff so it will hold water better and not be so porous. I'd make a sample using a single layer and see what you think.

@@empressofdirt thanks for the reply. Once l openned the package, it seemed so thin and flimsy that i decided to double it. I made 6 and added fun handles out of old tapestry ribbon from many years ago. Love your channel!

To much pinning, other than the bottom. Nothing is going to move. I think I'll add some lace ends at the top just for fun. Our garden is our front "lawn" area. We can take some bags to the camp for salad ingredients.
