How to Make Hawaiian Style Gon Lo Mein

Gon Lo Mein is a simple savory noodle dish with stir fried fresh veggies. Hawaii has localized this classic Chinese dish so that it becomes a go-to party dish because of its simplicity and tastiness. #gonlomein #stirfry #noodles
Ingredients:
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 onion
3 celery stalks
1 carrot
1 cup bean sprouts
½ lb char siu or chicken or beef
12 oz chow mein
Sauce:
2 tbsp shoyu (soy sauce)
3 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp sugar

she used char siu (chinese bbq meat) but in hawaii, we use spam, ham, or even bbq chicken.

I wish people would stop referring to local fusion food as “Hawaiian style”. Unless the dish is a traditional Hawaiian dish, it’s not Hawaiian, not even in “style” 🤔. This is a misrepresentation and exploitation of the Hawaiian culture, and steals ownership of the Hawaiian culture and ethnicity away from Hawaiians. There are Italian restaurants in Mexico… that doesn’t make pasta “Mexican style”. For some reason, in Hawai’i, people feel they can lay claim to the Hawaiian culture or even the word “Hawaiian”, simply because they grew up in our islands & therefore they “feel” Hawaiian “at heart” and feel some false sense of ownership over our culture… but there’s no such thing as “Hawaiian at heart”, a person or thing is either Hawaiian or not, there’s no middle ground. Perhaps our aloha, inclusivity and welcoming nature has caused people to think they’re allowed to take from us at will, but it’s 2023 & people should know better by now.
