Can you use plastic ice cream packages with lids instead of plastic containers that cost money , or are the plastic of the ice cream packages too thin ?
@diyduke
@diyduke 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah if it's too thin probably wouldn't work
@JeffTheHokie
@JeffTheHokie 7 жыл бұрын
The plastic doesn't need to be thick. It's only a form to hold the concrete until it sets. You can use those, soda bottles (2 and 3 liter) milks jugs, pails of various sizes, etc. If you don't have to buy the container (and you don't) this is very inexpensive.

Awesome video...i work for a concrete precast company and we have leftover concrete nearly everyday...ive used 4" or 6" pvc pipe cut about 3 or 4 inches tall and coat the inside of the pipe and whatever the pipe is resting on with diesel fuel or gas alternatively so after it sets up you can hammer the pvc off with ease. Just use the conduit or in my case I have so chrome pipes I found and anchor them just like buff dudes did. Love the work keep it up and stay buff!

ChilledOutBro How about if you could get two 5 gallon bucket lids, tape them together, then make a hole in one of them after you tape them together and pour the concrete in. Then drill a hole after you coated the concrete with wax or something to keep it together. But hey, these were your weights years ago. Kind of like reinventing the wheel. Just a theory.
@JeffTheHokie
@JeffTheHokie 7 жыл бұрын
Rule of thumb is that a gallon of finished concrete weighs about 20 pounds, so you need 2 1/4 gallons, or 520 cubic inches. If the mold is 15 inches across, your 45 pound plate will be close to (slightly under) 3 inches. You don't want it much thicker or your bar will run out of room for additional plates. Water chemically bonds with the mix, so the final weight should be a little more than the dry mix. Get an 80 pound bag of quikrete and use half for each plate. Get some plastic garden edging, cut 2 4-foot lengths, roll and tape them. Those will be the sides of your 2 molds (1 for each plate). Diameter will be 15.27 inches across, making your plates just a hai runder 3 inches thick.. The base of your mold could be plywood, cardboard, sheet plastic, or the ground. In the center of each, put a piece of 2 inch PVC pipe. That will be the donut hole- , and should fit an olympic bar snugly. Use caulk or duct tape to secure the pipe and keep the concrete out. Shoot for close to 3-inch depth. You probably won't hit 45 pounds exactly, but what is most important is that your two plates match each other. Weigh 40 pounds of concrete powder into each mold , when you mix in the water, measure equal amounts. When you finish, the 2 inch pipe should be a snug fit over your bar- if it's too snug, tap it out with a hammer, otherwise cut it flush with the plate.

If it's interesting to anyone: moisture doesn't evaporate from concrete mixture, because concrete does not dry - it sets. Water stays in it and combines with its various components.

i filled my containers with osmium instead of concrete, but i couldnt use plastic since osmium melts at 3027 degrees celsius (~5480 in fahrenheit) and even steel containers would be in danger of incineration as it melts in 2750 degrees celsius. i was pretty much forced to use tungsten containers, so the project was relatively expensive for me.

Not really. You can make a full set from 15-20-30 with about $20.

True. Time would be your cost in constructing one of these, plus you don't know how durable homemades are. Just buy some, big deal

A complete set of fixed dumbells could run close to $1000. With adjustable or plate-loading dumbells you are only in the mid 100s, but you run the risk of plates falling off. If your workout space is outdoors, anything with resale value (including your "cheap" several-hundred-dollar dumbell set) will eventually be stolen. OTOH, an 80 pound bag of concrete costs less than $5. The concrete set you build will function exactly the same as a set you buy, but will be worthless to thieves.
