Thank you so very much! I am an aspiring artist with failing eyesight, so it seems foolish of me to spend unneeded dollars on commercial gesso if I can reclaim failed paintings with your recipe! I am also 72 years old. Late to the calling, but truly enthusiastic and having loads of creative fun! Thanks again!

Actually failing eyesight can be turned to an advantage as we all should squint when painting so if you paint what you see don't try and paint what you think you see you will be amazed at what people may say

You can make your own calcium Carbonate with Egg shells from Chicken Eggs. You need a heavy duty blender or food processor. I would purchase one at a second hand store. Just wash and dry the eggs then grind then to a fine powder by pulsing the blender on and off. Just don't do to many egg shells at a time, because it will bind up the machine and burn out the motor. You need to remove and clean the blades each time you do this. You can also make side walk chalk with the ground egg shells. Leaving me to believe you may also be able to use regular children's sidewalk chalk for the Calcium Carbonate. In the US many times you can find Sidewalk Chalk at Flea markets in large Tubs for a dollar or two.

Just recently found you and can't thank you enough for your advice. I use your "recipes" for Gesso and Pouring Medium and they are great. Happy to find a British artist as most are American and their products aren't always easy to find, also expensive. Also the Welsh accent reminds me of my Dad (Not that your'e that old!)

I watched a number of different ways before hitting on yours as I need to cover a very large area of MDF for a backdrop and it needs to look like an old crumbling wall. What a joy to finally get some solid info on materials in gesso! I have to restore an old gilded carved jewelry box. I could get any info from museums like the Getty or Asian Art Museum in SF, and the conservators they directed me to, deliberately confused me with high priced products and misleading trails. Now I have it! This was so important, thank you!!

Hello! Thank you for making these videos. This is perhaps a silly question, but once dry would a gesso recipe like this create a suitable surface for oil painting? I'm an art student and I've fallen in love with building frames, stretching canvasses, and gessoing surfaces, but commerical acrylic gesso here in the states is ~$25USD/gal, and that adds up when working with larger canvasses.

So you use emulsion paint that is made for plaster type finishes on walls and ceilings. Surely using water based paint for wood is the way to go? Harder wearing and many are acrylic based. PVA might not even be needed with this. It will be dearer than emulsion but stronger I’m sure. Not a criticism but a thought to run by you.

hi! im just starting out with acrylics, but im a construction painter. so here my question: why should you use gesso? acrylics for professional painters in constrution are made out of acryl, pigments and fillers (calcium carbonat) and they cost around 4-5$ per kg. i dont talk about the cheap stuff u find in ur local hardware store, but professional level paint. where is the difference and why cant you use that paint to gesso you piece? thank you in advance :)
@CLIVE5ART
@CLIVE5ART 5 жыл бұрын
Pro contract paints are higher pigmented yes I agree. The gesso is used more as a rough surface for artist acrylic to be able to hold on too it's a process that has been used even for oild. It's more about the paint finish flow and archival properties. If your happy using your method then go for it .. I only show what is proven to work

Can you use diatomaceous earth in place of calcium carbonate?
@CLIVE5ART
@CLIVE5ART 5 жыл бұрын
For those who don’t know Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring sand extracted from the earth. It consists of microscopic skeletons of algae, known as diatoms, that have fossilized over millions of years There are two main types of diatomaceous earth: food grade, which is suitable for consumption, and filter grade, which is toxic to humans but has many industrial uses. So it’s best to stay with what’s been used for 100s of years and works which is chalk
