Creating the same design with melt and pour may be a bit tricky. As melt and pour cools, it thickens quickly. That makes it difficult to swirl the soap. Beylan Wimsatt Hi there! That's a great question! Soap is the result of a chemical reaction between some kind of oil and lye. The reaction is called saponification. So, lye is necessary to make the soap. However, after it's added, it chemically reacts with the oils and creates a new product - soap! That means after about 48 hours, most of the lye has been used up during the saponification process.
