I've been getting a few requests asking for a tutorial, so here you go! I hope it was helpful. I wasn't sure what my time constraints were, so I've also made a blog post tutorial with a little more instructions if you'd like to check it out! I'll link that below.
EDIT: The giveaway has ended! But since so many people expressed an interest in these keychains for the giveaway, I didn't want anyone feeling like they were missing out, so I made some more and they're available in my shop waiting to go home with you! You can get yours at my Etsy link below.

Yay! I'm so glad it was helpful! Shrink plastic is fun to work with once you get the hang of it and great for just starting out. Especially if you're on a budget and don't want to pay a huge order minimum for a manufacturer to make keychains for you. Good luck with your store!

dude the sponge tip was invaluable, I'm totally gonna do that whenever I try making charms! these look so good, digital is the way to go~ What kind of printer do you have? I saw it's a canon and I'm wondering if we need a specific printer to be able to get the quality you got 👀 I know it was a year ago but I totally would've entered to win! These charms are mega cute 💕

Yeah the sponge tip brush is a must for larger pieces, I always use it! I have a Canon Pixma Pro-100, but I'm sure you can get great results with other brands! I personally like Canon because the colors have always been brighter and crisper for me. Aww thank you so much for your interest! I didn't realize these would be so popular; I had a lot of folks who really wanted an ice cream kitty after the giveaway ended, so I now sell acrylic versions of them in my shop (if you're interested)! Always happy to help if you have any questions. :3

Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement! ❤I still have a long way to go and am by no means an expert in terms of a KZfaqr lol. But as you've said, I'm making the effort to be better and doing my best not to be hard on myself -- it's all about the joy of the journey, after all! Life can be so stressful, so it's important to remember to be easy on ourselves. I really appreciate your support of me and my work, and it means so much that you took the time to leave such a sweet comment. 🥰 I'd love for you to enter the giveaway! All you need to do is go to the giveaway post on my Instagram channel (@katzomg) for details on how to enter. It's the purple one titled "Keychain Giveaway". You can have up to 3 entries to increase your chances of winning! I wasn't anticipating on so many people entering, and I don't want anyone to feel discouraged if they miss out, so I decided to make more of the keychains to sell in my shop after the giveaway ends so that anybody who really wanted a certain keychain has the chance to get one. :3

Do you have tips for if you make a mess with the resin? My first project it ended up with some drops on the sides that dried.
@KatnipArt
@KatnipArt 10 ай бұрын
That's happened to me a couple times, too. Depending on how bad the droplets are, I usually take a sharp X-Acto knife to carefully scrape/pop them off and then use sandpaper or a nail file to sand down any remaining pieces of it. It doesn't always work 100% perfectly, but it could help mask the mistake!

Do you have to use an acrylic sealer to make the resin adhere to the shrink plastic?

@KatnipArt
@KatnipArt 2 ай бұрын
I usually don't, but you totally could if you wanted to! You'll need to rotate the piece around so that the resin can cure evenly, though. This can be accomplished using a UV "flashlight" or by holding the piece with a tool like tweezers and rotating it inside whatever you use to cure resin with.

Is there any way to give these a flat matte finish instead of the shiny dome look? I'm trying to figure out what to use to seal inkjet without yellowing and don't feel comfortable using any form of resin either.
@KatnipArt
@KatnipArt 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, that's a great question! I haven't personally tested this, but maybe you could try applying a matte-finish Mod Podge as a sealant instead of resin! That's a good substitute for a finish and they have so many different types. There's also matte-finish sprays that you could try, or a paint finisher that has matte qualities to it. But def. make sure to apply it to a test piece first before applying it to large quantities so you don't waste money or materials. I hope this helped! (I'm pretty curious about this now, myself lol. I'll see about making a video for matte finished looks and try out a bunch of different finishers to see what works best.)

Hi! These are super cute! Just want to know. Do you draw your own designs? That's what's holding me back from making shrink plastic jewelry and accessories. I can't free draw and come up with my own designs. 😕
@KatnipArt
@KatnipArt Жыл бұрын
Yes, I design and draw everything myself. As long as you have an interest to start a fun hobby like this, don't let lack of experience stop you! If you find it hard to get inspired, think about things you love most and try to doodle or sketch them for a few minutes every day. I often get into drawing slumps myself, so my main go-to inspirations are usually food and cats, (which is where these ice cream kitties came from lol) I hope this helps! ❤

@KatnipArt
@KatnipArt 2 жыл бұрын
The best appliance (imo) for shrinking plastic is a convection oven or toaster oven. But if you don't have access to those, some people use heat guns as more affordable alternative, and there's a lot of helpful videos that can show you tricks on how to best use them to shrink plastic. That said, it's not recommended to use a microwave oven for shrink plastic because the heat doesn't affect the plastic the same way as a convection/toaster oven does and it might ruin the plastic or not shrink properly. I hope this helps! :)

I hope to see more I just saw your video n its very understanding for beginners people like me
@KatnipArt

Thank you! Always happy to help! The brand of shrink paper I use is called Grafix, and it is a bit pricey! However, there's a lot of different shrink paper brands out there that could be comparable in quality. I can do another video on that since I've always seen various brands recommended but I haven't tried them yet xD; I think it'd be fun to do a demo for you all. As for UV resin: it isn't that expensive at all! It can range anywhere from $11 - $25 depending on the size of the container you want to get. I've used smaller bottles and they last quite a while anyway, so I'll usually stick with small-medium sized bottles. As for the printer: I'd say any printer is suitable for that paper! The only thing you want to make sure you get right is the type of your printer (ie. inkjet or laser). There's shrink papers made specifically for laser printers and others specifically for inkjets. I hope this helped! Please let me know if you have any questions or have requests for videos.

@@KatnipArt question about the acrylic paint on the edges, does it wear out from use? or are you supposed to seal it or resin it?
@KatnipArt
@KatnipArt Ай бұрын
@@caillousdad5786 I personally haven't experienced any issues, but it's a possibility. You could seal the paint using a varnish or paint sealant (applying it with the same paintbrush size that you used to paint the sides). That would be the easiest solution,. Or you could resin the sides. Resining the sides might be more work, though, because you'll need to either work in sections (which might result in an uneven look) or constant rotating to make sure the sides cure fully in the UV lighting. A UV flashlight may work for this, though! :)

@KatnipArt
@KatnipArt Жыл бұрын
@@katieee_llyn I use PhotoShop when I'm preparing my graphics, and while I'm in there I go to: Image - Adjustments - Brightness/Contrast and enter in the percentage I want in the "Brightness" section. Depending on what program you use, you might have a setting somewhere that allows you to lighten or brighten your image, so I'd try using that instead of adjusting the opacity. Otherwise, you might end up making your graphic more transparent and it won't be as crisp as an end result.

Not to worry! If you don't have a convection oven to use (or a regular one) you can use a hair dryer or heat gun to shrink your plastic. It's most cost effective to use one of those instead of an oven, but they do take a bit of time to get the hang of to fully shrink the plastic the way an oven does. I hope this suggestion helped to point you in the right direction! ☺
