Great set up! I do something similar but I used an old splitting wedge and drilled/tapped a 3/8''-16 thread in the striking face and bolted it into a shallow wooden box. I use 2lb dead blow hammer. I can sit and split for hours, lol. I make them short too, and put them in wine boxes from the liquor store.

here in upstate n.y......we burn strictly hardwoods...less creosote.

I spoke to my fireplace dealer about burning pine. He said it's fine, but its a hygroscopic species and should be stored under a wood shed for 2 summers. Modern high efficiency stoves and fireplaces will burn all kinds of wood with no issues provided it's seasoned properly. The higher burning cycles and higher temperatures burn off a lot of the vapors which would otherwise form creosote. In the pacific northwest they burn a lot of pine and fur. It has lower BTU output but I wouldn't actively avoid it if you can get it for free.

Softwoods generally burn hotter and produce less creosote if seasoned right. The main reason for burning hardwood is it has more BTU per volume. Less work to process and burns longer.

I don't think you should be burning wood with paint on it either. Potential for toxic fumes.

Please try to understand that heating oil, gas, etc. isn't high because of the administration. They don't have control of that. We are being taken by big corporations that have become greedy and will continue to use us to line their pockets. Thanks for the tips on cutting kindling and the correct woods to use. Looks so much easier than the traditional way to split kindling.
