In this video tutorial I teach you how to use a pair of leggings you already have to create a pattern that you will then use to create a brand new pair of leggings. We do not need to cut open the existing pair you have. This technique is very simple and great for sewing beginners.

In this DIY leggings tutorial I just show one way of making a pair of stretch pants. There are dozens of different ways to do everything in sewing especially when it comes to garment sewing. I tried to keep this instructional video short, concise and as basic as I could in order to encourage you beginners out there! Making your own clothes doesn't have to take forever and be super complex. Just start small and simple with a project like this one and work your way up to fancier pieces.

Seriously, thank you for pointing out which needles, types of fabric and why you are using them! There are sooooooo many videos that don't say these sorts of important tidbits and it makes being a beginners life hard!

I found you last evening and all I can say is you are totally awesome! I am 71, haven't sewed for 32 years and am starting anew. However, I learned more from you last night and this morning than I knew for my first 20 years of sewing. I never had instructions so just "faked" it but still made some pretty gorgeous things. Now I have the confidence, after watching just a couple of your tutorials, to really start creating the beautiful things I've been dreaming of, both for the new baby (first of her generation) born four weeks early on Cinco de Mayo (even though we aren't Hispanic I love Cinco de Mayo -- it's way cool) and her cohorts as they come along. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping an old lady find joy and purpose in her life!

I have been sewing for years and this is the first tutorial I’ve found that makes sewing leggings without a store purchased pattern easy as pie. I’m in love! 😍 I’m extra tall and I’m thick so clothes pants cost me a fortune. Now I can make my own in colors I like. Thank you so much, girly. I’m now a fan and I’ve subscribed.

Wow, Vanessa, I have never been moved to write a comment on KZfaq before. Your video was terrific on so many levels. Every thing was covered perfectly and really well thought out! From your most excellent explanation of how and why of materials needed and the step by step process of laying out, cutting, pining and sewing!! AND you didn't make us watch you put in every pin in slow-mo! It might be nice to show how to put in a one pin for those who really don't know, but most of us who choose to watch a video like yours know would know that. You gave all the information to really go out and DO! And I will! You exude energy, enthusiasm and excitement with out being Manic! Brava! Kudus and Wild Blessings! Can't wait to go view your other sites and projects.

Thank you so much for making this tutorial. It is by far the best one I have seen yet on how to make your own leggings without a store bought pattern. It also helps when trying to increase the size of store bought leggings that were too small. This totally frees you up to be able to buy smaller sizes and craft them to fit. Two thumbs up from this momma.

Excellent video! I have to admit, my friend gave me a roll of that craft paper- I use it for EVERYTHING from sewing patterns to paintings- handy stuff! I've been using it for pajamas recently, you can mark a couple different sizes on it and sort of cut and pin- and then you get everybody's jammies handled S - L. Similar to what we're doing here. Again thank you for your video. :)

Mind Blown!!! I am not paying for a pattern or class to teach me how to make leggings after this because you have shown me just how easy it is. I have worn a hole in my favorite leggings in the thigh area and was becoming frustrated because I wasn't sure if the patterns available would fit my bodacious backside and long legs without being too short. I like mine to bunch just a bit over my ankles. They are made of the best quality fabric, but they are the best fitting and the most comfortable pair I own. Now I can remake them in a nicer stretch fabric. Thank you SO much for showing us just how easy it is to draft and create your own pattern!!!

Hi Skinny Lady! I'm liking that gray jacket deal you have on, of course you made it....what pattern, it's very nice! Been following you for years, you're doing a great job, and getting people into the idea of sewing! It's making a resurgence!

I think yours may be the first tutorial I've encountered here mentions the presser foot, needle, fabric content, stitch, etc.--all the (very necessary) little details everyone else seems to take for granted. I've wistfully watched many a DIY video without ever taking on a project of my own simply because without that info I have no idea where to start. Thank you.
