Here’s how you can use complementary colors to make yoru painting more interesting & create more depth.
TEMPERATURE
One of the most fundamental ways to think about these colors is as a couple which has warm and cool relationships. The warmer colors will typically go in the lights while the cool colors feel natural in the shadows. For example when painting with orange and blue, you can use orange in the warm light areas and blue in the shadows. The natural transitions between the two will be more of a gray color.
BENEFIT
The interplay in the light and shadows can create an added dimension to your painting.
PERSPECTIVE
For example in a landscape the elements that are closer to us should have more of an orange warm color while colors further away should have more of a blue cool color.
BLUE AND ORANGE
You can emphasize the contrast of skin colors and shadows in daylight by using orange and blue to paint the skin. The orange will standout and pop more while the cool blue will recede and soften.
RED & GREEN
Red and green can be used subtly in the shadows of skin colors or can be used to emphasize landscapes.
YELLOW AND VIOLET
Yellow and violet work particularly well for pale white objects like cloth or fabric.
