TIP: For anyone who may be selling these or giving them away as gifts. If they don't look "professional" when they dry, just hit them with the heat from a hair dryer before capping. It will smooth them so they look machine done.

Hello there~The oil used in this recipe is a Calendula-infused Sweet Almond Oil. This is Sweet Almond Oil that has been poured over dried Calendula petals and allowed to infuse in a cool, dark place for several weeks and then strained. You could also use Calendula oil that has been made from Olive Oil, Sunflower Oil, etc. Thanks for the question! ~Kori

Hi Kayla, thanks for the question. Yes you can use a little bit of shea butter! But make sure it's just a little bit, because it will harden the lip balm. And I'd definitely recommend experimenting with coloring. Check out our madder root that we sell at Mountain Rose, it makes a nice orange to reddish dye! Hope that helps :) -Mason

I really love the video but just a suggestion, it would be nice if you can post the ingredients detail in description with the direct link to purchase them from your site. Also, it would be nice if you can write down the measurements of the ingredients in description box because sometimes in the videos they are not very clear about the measurements. Note: I think you made a mistake when talking about beeswax ratio in the lip balm.

@elizabethannshapiro Essential oils are concentrated, so a little goes a long way. I would use 5 to 10 drops for every 10 tubes of balm. Hope this helps and sorry for the delay! ~ Erin

Hi Ana! This is a good question. This lip balm is similar to any you might buy in that if you leave it in the warm sun or carry it around in a warm pocket all day, it will get softer and potentially melt. If you keep it out of the heat and sun, you should be fine. Of course, the final texture will depend a bit on what additions (and how much) you incorporate. Hope this helps! ~Kori

Hi Eric~Thank you for your questions. You can definitely experiment and use oil combinations (one of my favorites is coconut oil and cocoa butter). I normally use a pyrex bowl or measuring bowl for combining the ingredients and then heat it over the water so clean-up is a breeze. I hope this helps! Good luck ~Kori

Hi Parveen~Yes, you will want to pour the melted oils into the lip balm containers while it is warm. It starts to harden very quickly with the beeswax in it, so you will want to pour it immediately after mixing everything all together. ~Kori

Great question! Gently heating oils can be a good thing and can help some herbs to release their properties (namely roots and barks). It is a good idea to do a little research and see which herbs work best with longer, room temperature infusions and which ones work best with a warming of the oils. Be careful not to heat too quickly and you do not want to boil! For this, you need to get the beeswax and the oils to melt together--gentle heating just until incorporated :) ~Kori

Hi Jane! This is a good question. We have found that since extracts are alcohol based, they tend to separate out from the oils in the lip balm. An oil based flavoring or, what we tend to use, essential oils work best. I hope this answers your question. Good luck! ~Kori
@mountainroseherbs

You should be able to use any of the carrier oils we offer. Some are thicker than others, so you may need to experiment with the recipe to get it just right. As for essential oils, they are VERY concentrated and some can be caustic to the skin. I recommend researching before using them or stick with safe oils like lavender, orange, and peppermint. Less is always best with essential oils! Hope this helps. Cheers, Erin

Hello! There are those who like to infuse their oils in a sunny, warm place for the added benefit of the sun. The suggestion for a cool, dark place is to 1. avoid temperature fluctuations, which can compromise how long the herbs last and 2. the dark also helps to preserve the herbs and infused oils for longer. It really is up to you how you'd like to do it. Good luck! ~Kori

You can also make a good double boiler by putting a big metal mixing bowl on top of a pot of water. just make sure the the bowl isn't smaller than the pot because it may tip over and get water in your lip balm! And only handle it with pot holders as the bowl will get hot!

Hi April~That is a great and hard question :) Laws vary and change so it is best to check FDA regulations so you are up on the laws, risks, language, etc. It will depend what sort of ingredients you use and how you classify and name your products, as well as whether you are selling locally or shipping to other states or even internationally. A little research and preparation can go a long way! Good Luck ~Kori

You can use honey--but not instead of the beeswax. I have seen recipes that incorporate honey into lip balm recipes. They all add small amunts of honey after the oils and beeswax have been melted. I would suggest doing a little online research and finding a recipe that includes honey and giving it a try! Let us know how it goes :) Good luck~Kori

You could take a block of wood and drill holes in it to hold your tubes--might be easier to pour the balm into them. Also, instead of a double boiler, you can use a pyrex measuring cup in a saucepan. If you warmed the oil before pouring it in the wax, would that work?

If I wanted to sweeten the lip balm, could I add some dried stevia leaf to the calendula oil infusion? If so, how much would you recommend for a cup of oil? Not looking for it to be overpoweringly sweet, just a hint of sweetness.

Double boiler is just water that's put in a pot and you boil it. Then you take a heat proof bowl (usually glass) and put it on top. It just does the effect of evenly heating the item that you put in the heat proof bowl. Unless you don't have a pot or heat proof/glass bowl, then you don't have a double boiler. Hope this helps! :)

I definitely buy all my oils from Mountain Rose and make my own hair conditioners etc...I'm having one issue though. How do I make a lip balm of face lotion with SPF? I use coconut oil on my face daily and I know that that is a natural sun protectant and my medicine cabinet is FULL of ALL Mountain Rose products, but the spf is one thing I don't get. Is coconut oil strong enough alone? Also your product authenticity is awesome. Organic unrefined oil is WAY different that store bought. Thanks

Hi~ honey won't behave the same in the recipe and while you might do some research to find lip balm recipes that include honey, the beeswax actually helps make the lip balm the firm consistency for putting on your lips. I am guessing by "hard" honey, you mean honey that is crystalized? Once crystalized honey is heated, it will again be more fluid. I hope this helps a bit! ~Kori

Hi Mike~To a certain extent, there may be some experimenting or finding some recipes that help. We do have a few over on our blog at mountain rose blog (dot) com. Particularly, I'm thinking of one called "Peppermint Cheer" that has a peppermint lip balm recipe. The peppermint is going to be a stronger flavor than the orange so you might have to experiment with the ratios to get the flavor you want. Maybe try diffusing them in some oil first and tasting a tiny pinch to see? Good luck! ~Kori

Oh, one more thing, sorry. LOL! I'm a holistic kind of gal experimenting on my own and I really need a book that explains the uses and nature of oils etc...Do you suggest a book or does Mountain Rose havev their own? Also, WOW, I don't need a bunch of makeup, because of the effects of the oil, but I DO use waterproof mascara and that is all. Is there an oil that will take it off rather than using the refined oils the stores suggest? Ok, that's it.

also, if you want to make lip balm with microwave, you are gonna have to check moment in front of your microwave and if your mixture is almost melted, pop them out and stir, then pop them in microwave again for about 10 seconds and check again. if you make less than 6 lip balms, your microwaving time will only be taking 1 minute or 1.5minutes...

I have watched the salve video three times now. And she did 4 ounces of prepared oil to1 ounce of beeswax. I double checked to compare to your recipe for the lip balm, with the 8 ounces of oil to 2 ounces of bees wax. In my math, that is the exact same recipe. So question, shouldn’t be salve be softer than the lip balm meaning, that the lip balm should be 4 ounces of oil to 2 ounces of wax? I am just getting started with doing my oils and would appreciate an answer as to making sure I do this properly, thank you.

Hi Dion, we don't have a video showing how to make essential oils at home. Distilling essential oils requires a great deal of plant material, specialized equipment, and a solid understanding of chemistry in order to yield a safe end product, so until we are able to create a whole series detailing this process, we would recommend sourcing your essential oils pre-made from sources you trust!

I checked out your online store. Excellent! I have been wanting to start a cool business similar to yours. So many questions though, about packaging, labels etc... I once visited a store called Lush at the mall . They sold mainly bath supplies, predominantly the fizzers. I think those would sell like hot cakes, and be a nice addition to your product line. I figure since I am just starting my business, I would share any insights I have with you. This isn't a super competitive business, and I don't feel like it is unethical to help one another . I wish you all the best, and if you have any insight as to good first steps, I am grateful for that. I will share any ideas I have with you freely , and openly.
