How to Make Magnetic Window Shades on a RV

Make your own window sun shade that secures via Neodymium Disc Magnets. These shades not only help block the sun’s heat but allow for some visibility while still providing daytime privacy. These window sun shades are made from a high quality vinyl mesh fabric called Textilene or Phifertex Plus which is available through Sailrite. Made from a few simple steps: Pattern, sew on pockets, sew binding on edge, insert magnets & sew pockets closed, Secure magnets to window and you are done.

Is anyone worried about breaking the glass when the magnets slam together? We made window covers for our rv and made them slightly oversized with stainless snaps. They are a little hard to install sometimes but the sailrite snap tool is amazing and helps a lot. We love sailrite and have for years. Keep all the great videos coming.

I was wondering if this could be used for cars or SUVs for car camping? Obviously you could add some allowances to extend to the metal frame of the car or by adding straps via a gusset. Or would a material like protect-it be more suitable ? With the temperatures rising I have considered finding solutions for all the windows ofy vehicle.

I was thinking you could trace the magnet with dry erase before you remove the adhesive backing and then apply them with the shade off to make it easier to align without the other magnet pulling on it

Excellent instructions and thorough. However, I’d definitely want these same or another material on the inside. As someone else mentioned, they are screens but now you can’t open the windows. My little rv has windows and I’m always looking for a reasonable price or diy very nice looking privacy/sunscreen for my windows. It would take someone 3 seconds to do a grab and walk off with these great screens on the outside.

Thank you for your feedback! I understand your concern about not being able to open the windows with these screens on the outside. I'll definitely keep that in mind for future videos and try to come up with some DIY solutions for privacy and sunscreen on the inside of your RV windows.

I'm wondering why you would want these on the outside? You can't open up your window to allow for any airflow. And in the evening, when you still may want some privacy, if these were on the inside, you could open up your windows to allow for the cool evening breeze to flow through. And I suppose this Textilene or Phifertex does not allow for privacy in the evening once the lights are turned on in the R.V., or does it? If it doesn't, is there such a product that you know of that can actually create privacy during the night? Even if it is a product that you would apply to the windows themselves?

Thanks for the great tutorial. Is there a reason why the magnet pouches are on the outside? I think I like the look of the pouch on the inside facing the glass. I'd like to put temporary magnets on the inside of the trailer. Any reason why this wouldn't work? Thank You.

Hi Todd, Our logic was that the panel would look better since the magnet is holding the fabric completely flat against the window. If we were to put the patches on the inside we thought that the shade might hang a little loose due to the extra fabric from the patches, we could be totally wrong.

Great video. Thank you. I wondered about the magnets in the pockets flipping when the shades are being rolled up for storage. It they contact one another, is there enough movement in the pocket to allow them to flip over? If so, this would create problems when putting them back up, as their polarity will be reversed.

The pocket is not very large, so it is difficult for the magnet to flip. If it does flip, it means that you can easily flip them by hand.

I would just use a tent pole. Even a telescoping boat pole would work.

If it were my choice I would pick the less corrosive option for boaters, especially if in salt water, so I would use Snads.
